Happy Spring, OCFSD!

Spring is an exciting time in our community! At OCFSD, spring means we get the opportunity to welcome the next class of future Knights during our 4K and 5K Enrollment Event (March 22-24). It’s an exciting time for our new 4K and 5K students and families as they begin their educational journey with us here at OCFSD. It’s wonderful to see the excitement on the faces of our new students and their families as they prepare for new experiences and think of the endless possibilities for their future Knight of the graduating Class of 2037

This year, the District will launch a more concise version of the annual Parent/Guardian Survey in April. Helping students do their best in school requires a team effort. Parents, guardians, students, and schools all play important roles in this process. To help all of us learn how to make your child's schooling experience as positive and beneficial as possible, we invite you to share your voice with us–it should be a little less time consuming this time around!

Spring Break is March 27-31. I hope you find time to reflect and enter this spring season refreshed, revitalized, and ready for warmer and brighter months ahead!

In gratitude,

Dan Unertl, Superintendent

EMS Ambassadors

Middle Schoolers Work Together to Serve their Community

When reviewing the applications for the Ambassadors program at East Middle School, co-advisors Bridget Ashenhurst and Emily Splan look for students who are trustworthy, responsible, respectful, and helpful. “It’s important our Ambassadors possess these qualities because these students represent our school and have significant responsibility at school and out in their community,” shares Bridget Ashenhurst. The advisors also consider Grade Point Average, discipline records, and attendance and require a letter of recommendation from a former teacher, coach, or club advisor.

The Ambassadors program is open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade East Middle School and Empower Academy students. The program was created over a decade ago with the goal of supporting the students and staff at East Middle School and finding ways to serve the Oak Creek community. “I decided to join Ambassadors because I like to help people at school and in the community,” shares student Ambassador Brooklynn Griffin.

At East Middle School, the thirty-four student Ambassadors help welcome new students and families to the school. Having a student to ask questions and eat lunch with helps our new students establish a solid connection to their new school. “We greet the new student, walk them around the school, and just be there so they can have a friend on their first day,” says student Ambassador Jawad Ali. Ambassadors also help host school events, like the multi-school forensics event and an informational night for incoming sixth-grade students.

Community outreach is an integral part of the program. Ambassadors volunteer at various events at the Oak Creek Community Center and the Legion. The group also hosts different fundraisers like Jeans for Teens and a food drive benefiting the Salvation Army in Oak Creek. Their service to the community helps strengthen the relationship between the school and the greater Oak Creek community. “It feels good when you’re able to help someone out at school or in the community,” Emily Walton shares.

The Ambassadors recently hosted a “penny-war” fundraiser to raise money for Dibbs-17, a program that works to have as many people as possible learn CPR. Dibbs-17 was created after a cousin of student Ambassador Maximus Schneider experienced cardiac arrest and was saved by CPR. Maximus is glad the Ambassadors could help support Dibbs-17, “When I help someone out, I feel like I achieved something.”

Hundreds of OCFSD Students Participate in Music Festival

On March 4, 2023, more than four hundred OCFSD students in grades 6-12 participated in the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) Solo & Ensemble Festival at Oak Creek High School.

Preparing for the Solo & Ensemble festival is primarily a student-led process. First, students select their performance pieces from a list put together by WSMA. Next, students get to work practicing for the festival, learning the discipline of rehearsal. The festival also gives students a unique experience performing solo or in a small group in front of an audience and adjudicator. "This is very outside of their comfort zones since most of what the High School Band does is Large Ensemble Music; but, by the time they are Seniors, their confidence levels have grown exponentially," shares Guy Gregg, the Director of Bands at Oak Creek High School.

After their performance, students receive feedback to help advance their musical skills. Those that perform at the highest level (Class A) at a WSMA District Festival have the opportunity to receive a 1* (one-star) rating and advance to the State Solo & Ensemble Festival.

Oak Creek High School Receives Spirit of Excellence Award

Schools across Wisconsin competed for a title more prestigious than any other celebrated – the Spirit of Excellence Award – an award honoring schools for achieving excellence in leadership, sportsmanship, and service to their school and communities. "The Spirit of Excellence competition was a great opportunity to share with anyone and everyone just how dedicated, talented, and motivating our school really is," shares Callie Fadness, Vice President of the Student Council at Oak Creek High School. Callie served as the application coordinator and helped lead the team of students responsible for compiling and presenting the information for the competition.

Oak Creek High School was one of the many schools from across the state to submit a detailed portfolio to the Wisconsin Association of School Councils (WASC). Each portfolio highlights achievements in various categories, including service to school and community; sportsmanship and positive culture; leadership in academics, athletics, and fine arts; development of leadership both in and out of school; and lowering the achievement gap. "Personally, I think that the best part of the whole portfolio was the "Sportsmanship and positive school culture" dimension," says Callie. "Showing off what makes students feel included and safe at our high school stands out as one of the most fun and important dimensions of the whole project," Callie adds.

Oak Creek High School is the recipient of the Region IV WASC Spirit of Excellence award. "Oak Creek is a great school full of so many different people, talents, and abilities that are very easy to show off like we did," Callie shares.

WMS Forensics Team Advances to State

The West Middle School Forensics Team finished the regular season strong, taking home a second-place trophy and advancing to the State competition.

All students had a strong performance at the State competition last weekend. Aashritha Katuri advanced to the Power Round to compete against the top 33% of the 1,000 student participants. She placed in the top 5 in her category and went home with a medal! All students did an excellent job!
