Spotlight Story: Recreation Director Profile - Sarah Van Eaton
What is the position responsible for and how long have you been at it?
This is a brand new position here in Maryfield (Population: 348.) Thanks to our Recreation Board, Village Council, and RM Council this position was created. These groups saw the need for an organizational focal point for community activities and groups. So, my journey into this job began at the start of January 2022. The goal of this position is to create and oversee new programs and activities, as well as upkeeping existing ones we have now, and attain grants wherever possible. I’m very excited to get this job up and running and see it take off towards opportunities in our area!

Red Cross Swim and Lifeguard Programs Announcement
Forever…in motion
The Canadian Red Cross has made a decision to wind down its involvement in swim and lifeguard training in order to direct more attention to surging humanitarian demands in other areas.

Specifically, Red Cross is supporting its water safety delivery partners to transition to the swim and lifeguard training programs of the Lifesaving Society Canada (LSC) through the course of 2022. The exception will be in First Nations communities where the training will continue as part of their Indigenous Peoples Framework. As of 2023, that training will utilize LSC curriculum.

The Red Cross decision to step away from water safety was driven by regular assessments the organization conducts of all its services that consider evolving humanitarian needs, the evolution of the marketplace and alignment with our strategic direction as defined in Vision 2025.
Forever…in motion is an initiative that helps older adults become physically active through volunteer led physical activity groups.

Are you over the age of 50? Do you believe in the benefits of physical activity, are active and enjoy helping others? Why not volunteer as a leader? We can help you enhance and develop your skills in leading a physical activity class for your peers.
You will receive a Leader Manual, T-shirt, resistance band and certificate. Must be able to attend all four days.

Forever…in motion was developed by the Saskatoon Health Region and is provincially implemented by the Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association.

Local sport clubs and organizations are run by volunteers and could not operate without them. The programs and competitions they host would not be possible without volunteers. Volunteering is crucial to the athlete, the club and the sport!

Volunteer bonds are being implemented to alleviate volunteer deficits for local sport organizations, for child and youth programs, sports and events.

Inclusion Insights
February is Indigenous Storytelling month in Saskatchewan
Indigenous stories are fundamental to the teachings, ceremonies and ways of life of Indigenous people. Indigenous storytelling, focused on the teachings of culture, ceremonies and spirituality, are not viewed as entertainment but as messages. The stories can be funny, sad, scary or disturbing. They may not all have happy endings and they must remain as true to their origins as possible. This February, the Saskatchewan Writers' Guild will be hosting storytelling events.

For more information about the events during Indigenous Storytelling Month, please visit their website.
