Message from the Director

Greetings!

We are looking forward to seeing everyone in Sacramento next week for the Champions Onboarding and Mini College! With summer just around the corner, it's the perfect time to focus on the importance of healthy living and well-being. We hope that you are able to spend time enjoying the outdoors, eating fresh fruits and vegetables, and staying hydrated. Last month, we celebrated Rethink Your Drink Day and learned some great tips for how to stay hydrated with healthy beverage choices. In keeping with the theme of a healthy summer, we are excited to have Common Threads, a national nonprofit that supports food as medicine, give a healthy cooking demonstration at the upcoming Mini College. We have many other exciting sessions and speakers planned. Please check our events page to find updates.

Hunger and Coverage Cliff Threatens Health Progress: Navigating the Hidden Pandemic

By: Moazzum Bajwa, MD, MPH

Champion Provider Fellows (Cohort 3, Riverside County)

I recently celebrated with one of my patients as she met a major health goal: she maintained well-controlled blood sugar and blood pressure levels for a full year. In the eight years since our first visit, she struggled with consistent management of her diabetes, in large part due to challenges affording medications and nutritious food. In addition to caring for her two young children, she spent years taking care of her mother who suffered from complications from a severe stroke. Witnessing her mother’s decline in health, only furthered her resolve to improve her own health and I was excited to see her making progress towards this goal.   Read More

Senate Bill (SB) 348: A new bill to set guidelines for sugar content in school meals

SB 348 builds on the Biden-Harris’ administration Feb. 3 announcement of new national school nutrition standards aimed at reducing sugars, fat and salt, and increasing whole grains in school meals. SB 348 would also require California to maximize newly available federally funded child nutrition benefits in order to prevent childhood hunger during the summer.

Clean Beaches Week

Save the Week: July 1-7, 2023

An initiative established by The Clean Beaches Coalition, Clean Beaches week is celebrated annually from July 1st – July 7th. With so much media attention focusing on the effects of our waste on marine life, the oceans and our coastal landscape this is an excellent opportunity to be proactive and attempt to address a small part of the overall problem while raising awareness of a much larger global challenge. In 2007 the United States Senate and House of Representatives passed the National Clean Beaches Week Resolution by unanimous consent. Known as the Earth Day for beaches, hundreds of events are organized locally on beaches around the USA and include beach clean ups, art fairs, seafood festivals and other educational events aiming to raise awareness about respecting the beach and surrounding environment.
