What should we read next?

Do you know of a book that you think would be good for a group discussion? Is there a topic or book in the Bible you've always wanted to know more about? Is there an issue in society that you think people of faith should think about?

Come for a brief brainstorming session this Sunday after worship as we plan upcoming topics for discussion! We plan to meet on Wednesday evenings throughout the year, including a time of prayer.

Interested in helping with Coffee Hour?

There will be a brief orientation session for people interested in helping set up and clean up for Coffee Hour in the Fireside Room after worship this Sunday.

Sunday's Sermon

God's housewarming party

A wise retired pastor once told me early on that, while there are probably an infinite number of ways to get to know someone: chatting at work, coffee or dinner or drinks together, text messages, a road trip, conversations after church, — there is perhaps nothing that will yield more information, nothing that will give you a better glimpse into who they are and how they live, than visiting them in their homes.

It’s an interesting thought, isn’t it? What do our homes say about us? So much of the space we occupy in life is outside of our control; it belongs to somebody else and we inhabit it as guests, as employees, as visitors. So how do we create and decorate and live in our own spaces? What is on our walls? On our bookshelves? In our kitchens? Is everything in perfect order, or is there a little bit – or a lot – of chaos? Is it cozy, formal, modern, traditional, or fun bohemian mix of everything? When we visit the homes of our friends and neighbors, do we think it’s a place that we could live?

Register for Calumet Retreat!

March 3-5

Our annual congregational retreat at Calumet is fast approaching! Retreat is a time of relaxation, re-connection with nature (and with God!), and deepening friendships. From toboggan runs to campfire stories to thoughtful conversations and worship, there is a little bit of everything to fill our time.

Because of a generous donation to our congregation, the FLC Calumet Ministry Fund is able to subsidize the total cost for this retreat so that everyone is able to go regardless of financial means.

Lodging is on a first-come, first-served basis, so if you have a preference of where you stay, please turn in your registration form as soon as possible.

If you are interested in being part of a small group to help plan our time together on retreat, please contact John Benedict or Karin Butterworth.

PLEASE NOTE: There will be NO IN-PERSON WORSHIP AT FLC on Sunday, March 5. We will be live-streaming our congregational service from Calumet for everyone not present at the retreat.

The bishop is coming on Jan. 29!

We are excited to welcome our awesome Bishop Jim Hazelwood to FLC worship and conversation on Sunday, January 29!

Bishop Hazelwood will preach and join us for a festive coffee hour and conversation following the service. He will share his wisdom with us on how the Lutheran Church is adapting to a post-COVID world, answer questions you might have about the ministry of the Synod, and help us think about how we might live into our mission as a congregation into the future.

Bishop Hazelwood’s second six-year term concludes in 2024, and he will not be seeking re-election. He has expressed a desire to be with us one final time while he is in office, and we are delighted to welcome him!

Please make it a priority to come to worship on January 29 to show him the vitality and strength of our small congregation, and the great things we are doing together!

Epiphany House Blessings

On Epiphany, we are led with the magi to the first earthly home where the Jesus lived: Mary and Joseph’s dwelling place in Bethlehem.

It is in the home that the first experience of love occurs; it is there that love is nurtured and grows to maturity. The ministry of Jesus occurs in many different homes. Therefore, the custom arose among Christians of blessing homes at Epiphany, inviting Jesus to be a “guest” in our home, a listener to each conversation, a guide for troubled times, and a blessing in times of thanksgiving.

To schedule a house blessing during this special time (or any time) contact Pr. Jon! It's a great way to spend some time together, share a meal, and catch up on life after the holidays.

Annual Meeting on Feb. 12

All voting members of the congregation are invited and encouraged to attend our Annual Meeting following worship on Sunday, February 12!

Your voice and contribution is important. At the annual meeting we will:

  • review and celebrate our past year of ministry together through the Annual Report, which includes reflections from all church leaders
  • review and approve our budget for 2023
  • review and approve the proposal of how the Mission Fund Disbursement for 2023 will be used
  • elect people to leadership positions in our congregation
  • ground all of the "business" of the church in a spirit of prayer

According to our Constitution (and that of all ELCA churches) "voting members" are all those who have been have been confirmed or received into membership, and who have attended worship, received holy communion, and made a financial contribution of record in the past year.

The Annual Report will be available one week before the meeting both online and in print.

This Sunday

Third Sunday after Epiphany

Jesus begins his public ministry by calling fishers to leave their nets and follow him. In Jesus the kingdom of God has come near. We who have walked in darkness have seen a great light. We see this light most profoundly in the cross—as God suffers with us and all who are oppressed by sickness, sin, or evil. Light dawns for us as we gather around the word, the font, and the holy table. We are then sent to share the good news that others may be “caught” in the net of God’s grace and mercy.
