April 2022
Greetings!

Here's the latest information about things going on in the Borough of Pompton Lakes this month, assembled and produced by the Public Information Department.
Mayor Serra's Message
With a hint of Spring weather in the air and daffodils blooming it is a sure sign the end of winter is near!

I am pleased to say COVID has become manageable and activities have resumed.

Yearly, the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) presents an Emergency Awareness Seminar that provides vital information offering planning and preparation for a disaster. Some of the topics discussed during the presentation include flooding, weather related power outages, shelter information, developing an evacuation plan etc. During the March 16, 2022 presentation, OEM Coordinator, Al Evangelista emphasized strategic actions residents should take prior and during emergency events. Please refer to PLTV Channel 77 or the Borough website to view the Emergency Awareness Seminar.

The Recreation Committee will sponsor an Egg Hunt and is scheduled for April 2, 2022 at 2:00 PM at the Tennis Courts. In the past, this event has been well attended and is a fun time for children. Summer Camp at Hershfield Park is scheduled for June 27th through July 29th. Middle School Camp scheduled for July 5th through July 15th will take place at Pompton Lakes High School. Paddle boats will be available to rent after Memorial Day. Recreation is hiring counselors.

Additional information is available through Facebook, Library Digital Sign, and Borough Website.

Pompton Lakes/Riverdale Little League Opening Day Parade is scheduled for Saturday, April 9, 2022. Baseball and softball teams gather at Pompton Lakes High School at 12:00 noon and the parade ends at Joe Grill Baseball Fields. The ceremonial day events and first pitch follow.

Change of Town Officers Day is scheduled for April 13, 2022. Pompton Lakes High School students assume the role of Mayor and Council and meet with their counterparts prior to a Mock Council Meeting.  The CTO meeting begins at 7:00pm in the Municipal Council Chambers and residents are encouraged to attend, as the students are creative and resourceful and provide what they perceive to be of importance.

I am happy to announce many of our programs and events will once again take place. These events have a long history and provide community spirit! Over the last two years, our community has encountered many challenges and these activities bring our neighbors, friends and families together. We all have the same common goal – to continue to make Pompton Lakes the best community to live in.
Spring is a good time of year to get out and enjoy the parks, trails and lake. The Trails Committee maintains the trails within Town and I would encourage residents to hike through the many trails the Borough has to offer. The Borough continues to upgrade park equipment for families to enjoy or a walk by the lake provides a beautiful view.

I would like to remind residents to refer to the Town Calendar as Spring Cleanup for leaves, brush and branches begins in April.

Mayor Michael Serra
Borough Clerk's Office
Licensing -- Solicitors and Canvassers / Chapter 5 Section 5-21 Municipal Code

As we approach the warmer weather, solicitors begin to canvass the neighborhoods. Borough residents who request that solicitors not solicit on their property can be added to the “No Solicitation” list by filling out a “No Solicitation Form” available in the Clerk’s office or on the Borough Website at www.pomptonlakes-nj.gov under Clerks Office.

Solicitors should adhere to regulations and file an application with the Borough Clerk for a license to solicit. Upon completion of the application process, a license will be issued and a solicitor must carry Identification along with the licensed permit issued by the Borough. A solicitor is required to have a copy of the “No Solicitation” list maintained by the Municipal Clerk and must refrain from any solicitation on the properties set forth on the list. Solicitors are required to follow the regulations and contact the Borough weekly for an updated list of addresses on the no solicitation list. Permitted hours; 10:00am through 9:00pm. Solicitors are prohibited to solicit on Sundays and holidays.

If someone solicits at your home and you are on the “No Solicitation” list or have a no solicitation sign on your property, immediately contact the Police Department (non-emergency 973-835-0400) to file a complaint.

Borough of Pompton Lakes Participating in UDrive. UText. UPay Campaign
Law enforcement officers from the Pompton Lakes Police Department will be cracking down on distracted drivers during April as part of New Jersey’s UDrive. UText. UPay. enforcement campaign.

Beginning April 1 and running through the end of the month, the high visibility law enforcement initiative will target motorists who engage in dangerous distracted driving behaviors such as talking on hand-held cell phones and sending text messages while driving.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in 2019 alone, 3,142 people were killed in distracted driving crashes on our nation’s roads and an estimated 400,000 people were injured. Driver inattention has remained the most frequently cited cause of fatal and incapacitating crashes in NJ, over seven times higher than the total crashes cited for unsafe speed over the five-year period 2015-2019. Driver inattention was a contributing circumstance in nearly 49 percent of NJ crashes in 2019.

Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system — anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving. Texting is the most alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for five seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.

New Jersey is one of eight states nationally to receive dedicated federal funds this year to tackle the issue of driver distraction. This federal funding will be used for police overtime enforcement grants at the local level as well as a statewide multimedia public awareness campaign on this important issue.
Generous Residents Participate in Vitalant Blood Drive
The Pompton Reformed Church in Pompton Lakes recently hosted a blood drive managed by the nationwide, nonprofit blood collection organization Vitalant. Conducted in the midst of an ongoing blood shortage, the event was a tremendous success, with 29 pints collected.
“We always want to offer the church building for organizations and people in our community to use,” says John Burden, pastor of the Pompton Reformed Church. “We really value our partnership with Vitalant, as we work together to meet such an important need.”

Vitalant’s Manager of Donor Recruitment, Robert Hatch, is one of the Pompton Lakes residents who donated during the drive.

“Doing for others is a crucial part of everyday life,” says Hatch. “I can put my head on the pillow at night knowing I did what I could to help someone in need.”
