Happy World Wetlands Day!
World Wetlands Day (WWD) is on February 2, 2023 and is an annual opportunity to raise global awareness on the value of wetlands, celebrate wetlands’ diverse services to humanity and nature, and trigger action locally, nationally, internationally to save the world’s wetlands.
This day is a call to take action for wetlands is the focus of this years’ campaign. It's an appeal to invest financial, human and political capital to save the world’s wetlands from disappearing and to restore those we have degraded.
The theme for 2023 is Wetlands Restoration and highlights the urgent need to prioritize wetland restoration.
Detroit River Wetlands
Collaboration between many organizations help to protect existing coastal wetland habitat and restore the function in priority areas. For example, the Great Lakes Marsh Monitoring Program has monitored wetland bird and amphibian populations binationally since 1995 with the help of Bird Studies Canada, Essex Region Conservation Authority, the United States Environmental Protection Agency and dedicated volunteers.
In addition, through the Canadian Wildlife Services branch of Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Monitoring program is administered to monitor wetland wildlife communities (marsh birds, aquatic macroinvertebrates and submerged aquatic vegetation), habitat and water quality.

Essex Region Conservation Honors Conservation Award Winners
| On January 19 2023, eight organizations and individuals were honored with Essex Region Conservation Awards for their commitment to the local environment. The DRCC would like to give special recognition to the following award winners for their work in protecting the Great Lakes and restoring the Detroit River. | |
Collavino Family
In 2005, the Collavino family purchased a property in the River Canard watershed as a farmland investment. The site is a mix of wetland and floodplain within the Detroit River Area of Concern. It was previously owned by General Chemical, used then for salt brine extraction.
n fall 2022, after several years of discussion and careful consideration, the Collavino Family generously donated this 150 acre property to ERCA to become the Collavino Conservation Area. The wetland portion of the site has remained undisturbed over the years and is recognized as a Provincially Significant Wetland and Environmentally Significant Area. The site is also identified as a Priority Canadian Habitat Site in the Detroit River Area of Concern, and its assured protection supports the delisting process.

Friends of Ojibway Prairie
Established in 1992, the volunteer organization organizes and funds a variety of activities such as hikes and talks to educate and engage people in learning about this unique habitat, and have even established a clothing line to raise funds while allowing people to express their pride for Ojibway. They regularly use their volunteer platform to help promote biodiversity protection through prescribed burns and advocacy for a wildlife overpass.
| | |
In 2021, the Government of Canada announced interest in exploring the possibility of creating the Ojibway National Urban Park. In Canada and around the world, there is growing awareness of the importance of urban parks as essential places for conservation, recreation, learning, and mental and physical wellbeing. FOOP has been instrumental in voicing their support for this effort, and last year, they were selected to testify at the House of Commons’ Environment and Sustainable Development Standing Committee on this matter.
For its dedication to the stewardship, protection and advocacy of this important prairie habitat, we are pleased to recognize the Friends of Ojibway Prairie with the Volunteer Conservation Award for an organization!

Enwin Utilities
ENWIN Utilities Ltd. is the licensed electricity distribution company serving customers in the City of Windsor, with the mission to provide safe and reliable energy and water services in a cost-effective, sustainable manner.
| |
Enwin prioritizes sustainable practices through a number of initiatives. It’s currently in partnership with Automobility Enterprises and St. Clair College to convert a fleet pickup truck from its traditional V8 internal combustion engine into an electric vehicle.
In 2022, ENWIN launched the new Green Button standard to allow local families and businesses to track and make decisions regarding their energy use. Studies have found that access to energy data, which Green Button along with smart home devices, enables, can help consumers achieve energy savings of up to 18 percent.
ENWIN has also encouraged its customers to save paper and trees by switching to online e-billing to reduce its carbon footprint. This campaign has supported both the Windsor Essex Child/Youth Advocacy Centre and ERCA. In fact, during the summer of 2022, for every ENWIN customer that opted into the e-billing program, a tree will be planted – and this effort was extremely successful with over 1,000 customers signing up.
As a result, ENWIN will be supporting the planting of 1,187 trees on Earth Day 2023! This marks the second time ENWIN has supported the Earth Day tree planting, and its first campaign in 2020 allowed more than 1000 trees to be planted in 2022.

License free Family Fishing Weekend in Ontario (February 18 to 20 2023) | |
For hundreds of years, the Detroit River has been a focus for boating, fishing and hunting, as well as nature viewing and appreciation. New fishing docks and observation platforms have been constructed, and soft-shore engineering projects have enhanced the aesthetics of the river while also improving fish habitat values and access for fishing. Through the DRCC partnership, efforts to restore, enhance and protect fish populations and habitat have improved many fish species’ health and presence in the river overtime. The River is known internationally for its Muskellunge, Walleye, White Bass and Yellow Perch in addition to other sport fisheries.
Four times a year, Canadian residents can fish in Ontario without buying a fishing license, during:
- Family Fishing Weekend in February (February 18-20, 2023)
- Mother’s Day Weekend in May (May 13-14, 2023)
- Father’s Day Weekend in June (June 17-18, 2023)
- Family Fishing Week in July (July 1-9, 2023)
License-free periods remind us of the value of Ontario’s recreational fishery, and the importance of keeping it healthy for future generations. You must:
- follow conservation license catch limits
- obey size limits and sanctuaries
- follow the fishing regulations
