COP 26: A Bold Step Forward for the Water Resilience Agenda

Water gained prominence at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 26). In this blog post, Pacific Institute President Jason Morrison describes how:
- the water agenda received significantly more attention than during previous UN climate change conferences;
- the concepts of resilience and adaptation are gaining traction alongside mitigation; and
- the corporate sector has an opportunity to lead by turning commitments into action.

Update from the CEO Water Mandate: Record Growth for the CEO Water Mandate in 2021
The Pacific Institute is Co-Secretariat of the CEO Water Mandate, a UN Global Compact initiative that mobilizes business leaders to take action on water, sanitation, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
|
In 2021, 34 new companies from 17 countries endorsed the CEO Water Mandate, bringing the total number to 207. With more new endorsers than any year prior, the CEO Water Mandate has likewise expanded the reach of the Water Resilience Coalition to scale water action. Carrying this momentum into 2022, the CEO Water Mandate will continue to enhance and expand water stewardship for a more water resilient future.

Mai-Lan Ha Promoted to Pacific Institute’s Executive Team
|
The Pacific Institute is excited to announce that Mai-Lan Ha has been promoted to join its executive team as Associate Director of Corporate Water Stewardship and Deputy Head of the CEO Water Mandate. Ha has played a leadership role in developing the Pacific Institute’s corporate water stewardship program since 2011.
“We are thrilled to welcome Mai-Lan to this expanded leadership role,” says Jason Morrison, President of the Pacific Institute and Head of the UN Global Compact CEO Water Mandate. “As the Pacific Institute advances toward its 2030 goal to catalyze the transformation to water resilience, Mai-Lan’s strategic vision will be critical to fully scale corporate-sector commitments and action on water.”

Save the Date: 2022 Salton Sea Summit in Palm Desert, California
|
California's Salton Sea faces a host of challenges, including a declining water supply, rising salinity, very high levels of nutrients that generate excessive algal growth, and very low oxygen levels. In April 2022, the Pacific Institute — in cooperation with the University of California Riverside School of Public Policy and Palm Desert Campus — will hold a Salton Sea Summit in Palm Desert, California. Topics will include public health, lithium extraction, long-range Salton Sea plans, ecology, and hydrology.

Fall 2021 California Water Action Collaborative Meeting

The Pacific Institute is a founding member of the California Water Action Collaborative (CWAC), a platform for diverse stakeholders to pursue collective action projects aimed at improving California’s water security for people, business, agriculture, and nature. Last week, Pacific Institute Director of Research Heather Cooley, Senior Researcher Cora Kammeyer, and President Jason Morrison presented at the Fall 2021 CWAC meeting.
