Join the D10 Como Community Council in 2023

The D10 Annual Election is coming up in April. Any community member in District 10, age 16 or older, is eligible to run. The board is made up of volunteers like you, elected by neighbors like you.

In 2021, the board made a change to designate board seats for renters, youth (16-24), and senior (62+). That change began to roll out in 2022 with a senior and renter seat (now filled), and continues with this April’s election with 1 renter seat and 1 youth seat on the ballot, in addition to seats for the 4 sub-districts and 3 at-large positions. If you fit these criteria, please consider running, we’re holding a seat for you! (Renters, youth, and seniors can hold other seats as well!)

All of our board and committee meetings are open to the public and agendas are posted in advance in this newsletter. We encourage you to come to some of our meetings and get to know us! To get on the ballot, submit a board member application.

The filing deadline is Sunday April 2. The election results are announced at the April board meeting. You can view some basic information about the election here. If you have any questions or would like to know more about being a board member you can reach out to D10 Como Park at district10@district10comopark.org.

Como History Tidbit

From Laura Oyen of the Como Neighborhood History Project

Thanks to everyone who stopped by the Photo History Harvest during the Breakfast Blizzard event at North Dale. We enjoyed talking with folks about their history of the Como Neighborhood. Here is a post card that was shared with us by Marijo Schwiderski. One of her relatives gave the postcards to her. These are from the early 1900’s. We thought you would enjoy looking at the postcard and reading the note.

One of the cool things about this post card was that it was sent in 1909. The postmark is very clear being sent from St. Paul, MN at 3 AM on May 19, 1909. It cost only 1 cent to mail a postcard from St. Paul to Eau Claire, WI!

For those of you who are not the best at reading “cursive” here is a translation:

“I came over to St. Paul yesterday and called on Carrie and Helen and Freda. I stayed at Freda’s last night and she came over to Carrie’s today. I am going back to Minneapolis tomorrow evening. The folks are all well. Mary”
