Students and Residents Shine at the Academic Surgical Congress

asc-23-1 image

The 18th Annual Academic Surgical Congress, which is the joint meeting of the Association for Academic Surgery (AAS) and the Society of University Surgeons (SUS), was held February 7-9, 2023, in Houston. McGovern Medical School has a strong history of engagement with the AAS and SUS, boasting several past presidents, including Drs. Tien Ko (AAS President, 2002), Lillian Kao (AAS President, 2014), and David Mercer (former Chief of Surgery at LBJGH, SUS President, 2004).

Highlights included a committee session co-led by Dr. Martin Blakely (McGovern Medical School) and Rebecca Snyder (MD Anderson) on "Innovations and Underused Existing Recommendations to Stimulate Randomized Clinical Trials in Surgery." Dr. Blakely spoke on the problems with a dichotomous worldview around the p-value, and Dr. Kao discussed the advantages of Bayesian statistical analyses for surgical randomized trials.

However, presentations by students and residents were the main attraction of the meeting. Trainees included one pre-medical student, 21 medical students, and eight residents. Faculty mentors represented subspecialties ranging from trauma surgery to psychiatry.

HIGHLIGHTS

Join Book Club!

The Department of Surgery BOOK CLUB is a virtual meeting via WebEx, held on the first Tuesday of each month at 5:00 p.m. The books are selected by attendees, and each has his-her turn; the group discusses the suggestions, and the book is chosen for the next session. Some books are selected based on recommendations from audible with the highest rank.

The main aims of the BOOK CLUB have been:

  • Self-development
  • Non-technical skills such as organizational skills and decision-making
  • Well-Being
  • Self-expression
  • Insight

All interns, residents, and attendings are welcome. It is highly recommended that the attendees read the book or listen to the audible before they attend. However, everyone is welcome to attend, listen and participate, even if they still need to finish the book.

Starting in March 2023, there will be two awards for the interns and residents.

  1. The intern or resident with the highest attendance of at least 7/12 months or higher from the first participation in the BOOK CLUB will get a "Self-Development Award" at the end of the year, which will be given next year at the end of the academic year. The award will apply to levels 1-V.
  2. The interns and residents with attendance of 7/12 months from the first participation in the BOOK CLUB will get a 12-month free audible membership for the upcoming 12 months, which is about 200.00/12 months. Four attendings have volunteered to sponsor four interns-residents who achieve this goal. If more than four accomplish the goal, we will ask for more attendings to help with the sponsorship. This award will apply to levels 1-IV.

THE BOOK CLUB team looks forward to seeing you!

- Marianne Cusick, Tamara Saunders, Shinil Shah, and Farzaneh Banki

Burn Awareness Week

In February, the John S. Dunn Burn Center at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center participated in National Burn Awareness Week primarily focusing on preventing scald burns. Hot liquids, like instant cups of soup, tea, or coffee, boiling pots of water, and overly hot bathwater, send hundreds of people to the hospital every month. To protect against scald burns, people can closely supervise children in the kitchen and bathroom, keep hot items away from the edges of counters and tables, turn pot hands away from the edge of the stove, use the back burner on stoves when possible, and set your water heater temperature no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Patients with young children or decreased extremity sensation (e.g., from diabetes) should test the water or measure its temperature before submerging in a bath. In the event of a scald or burn, stop the burn process by rinsing the area with cool water and seek medical attention if needed.

The multi-disciplinary group that led the National Burn Awareness Week at Memorial Hermann was led by Burn Program Manager, Heather Garcenila. She was able to secure a proclamation from Mayor Turner. She and the Burn Center therapists distributed oven mitts and yellow rubber ducks that change color according to the water temperature upon which they are placed.
