INDUSTRY NEWS

Provincial budget is good news for construction industry: RCCAO, ACEC, PCA

The Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario (RCCAO) says Tuesday’s provincial budget is a win for Ontario’s construction industry.

Budget 2024, Building a Better Ontario, is a plan to build critical infrastructure, recognizing that, building and maintaining critical infrastructure like roads, housing, transit, water and wastewater capacity is key to ensuring the province will continue to have a strong economy and high quality of life.

RCCAO also supports the Government of Ontario’s renewed commitment to building transformational transportation infrastructure projects, including Highway 413 and the Bradford Bypass.

BuildForce forecasts strong ICI, residential growth for Ontario to 2029

Construction activity in both residential and non-residential sectors in Ontario is expected to be robust coming out of 2024 and the industry should see continuous growth through to the end of the decade says a new report from BuildForce Canada.

The 10-year forecast for Ontario released March 26 suggests the province’s non-residential sector will sustain the strong growth that began in 2016 until at least 2029, with growth fuelled by a long list of major projects in most regions of the province. Meanwhile, BuildForce said, residential building looks poised to emerge from the stagnancy caused by high interest rates and rising inflation to resume growth starting in 2025 as housing costs ease and population growth drives demand for additional housing.

Canada’s construction sector poised for growth

Canada’s construction sector experienced a slight contraction in 2023, as growth in the non-residential sector was offset by a moderate decline in activity in the residential sector. Despite this trend, the industry continues to perform at an elevated level, and is poised to grow through 2033, reports BuildForce Canada.

The national industry-led organization that supports the labour market development needs of the construction and maintenance industry in Canada has released its 2024–2033 Construction and Maintenance Looking Forward national forecast. A key finding in the report is that activity in the residential and non-residential sectors will chart different courses across the short term.

Home Depot buying supplier to professional contractors in a deal valued at about $18.25 billion

Home Depot is set to acquire SRS Distribution, a professional materials provider, for about $18.25 billion, marking its largest purchase ever. This move significantly enhances Home Depot’s footprint in the professional builder and contractor sector, a strategic pivot as retail sales slow post-pandemic. The acquisition is seen as a major bet on the strained housing market, where a shortage of new homes has escalated prices. Home Depot’s expansion into this domain reflects a broader strategy to capture a larger share of the booming home improvement and construction market, anticipating a total addressable market of $1 trillion.
