Message from MANA President, Ewy Mathé
|
Dear MANA members,
Time is flying and we are now well into the year 2024! I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you, MANA members, about the MANA mission and activities and also highlight some key efforts/achievements that the board has accomplished thus far.
Our MANA community, namely comprised of metabolomics scientists and professionals, is growing. The MANA mission is to promote the growth and development of the field of metabolomics particularly on the continent of North America by providing opportunities for developing new connections (e.g., between government, academia, and industry), for highlighting work and achievements, and generally to provide activities that increase our understanding of metabolism. To this end, MANA aims to empower our community to share scientific and career developments experiences through inclusive and impactful activities. MANA is an International Affiliate of the Metabolomics Society and is broadening alliances with other scientific groups. If your group would like to interact with MANA, please do not hesitate to contact us!
Your MANA board has been quite busy this New Year! Here are some key achievements to date this year:
- Creation of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, led by Dr. Yamilé López-Hernàndez.
- Refinement of written guidelines documents to assist organizers of Annual Conference planning.
- Outreach to members wishing to create new interest groups (from the 2023 Annual Conference Survey).
- Refinement of processes for streamlining selection and evaluations of presenters of the Annual MANA Conference.
- Guiding the planning of our Annual Conference coming up on Oct. 21-24, 2024 in Tampa, Florida.
Our Interest Groups have also been quite busy providing events open to all of our members! Please be sure to check our News & Events pages for the latest. Some activities I wish to highlight are the upcoming Virtual Metabolomics Journal Club, SODA Meets, WomiX events, Early Career Member Events, Microbiome Interest Group, and NMR Interest Group meetings. Note also that we are seeking volunteers for 2025 Annual MANA conference hosts and also applicants for early career member travel grants (deadline fast approaching!).
All and all, I’d like to thank all our board members, as well as interest group and committee leaders and volunteers who are driving all these activities. We have a vibrant community so check the website frequently, engage with us directly or through our interest group and other activities, and be sure to read through The Brief to find out more!
With Warm Regards,
Ewy Mathé, your MANA President

Have you heard of the Orbitrap Astral Mass Spectrometer, launched at ASMS 2023? This new mass spectrometer combines two HRAM analyzers to allow for both full-scan HRAM MS1 data and HRAM MS2 data to be acquired simultaneously in a single experiment. With the need for both quantitation and discovery in metabolomics and lipidomics research, the Orbitrap Astral provides a unique platform from which both experiments can be performed simultaneously and without compromise.
Here is a white paper that talks more about Simultaneous Quantitation and Discovery (SQUAD) Analysis and how Orbitrap Astral can improve upon standard mass spectrometry-based metabolomics methods.

Special Thanks to Robert (Bob) Powers from the NMR IG Members
We are deeply grateful to Dr. Robert (Bob) Powers who, as chair of the MANA NMR Interest Group, provided excellent leadership which enabled the MANA NMR IG to publish a valuable paper on the current state of NMR metabolomics data deposition, use, and reuse. Bob has been key to getting a perspective manuscript entitled “Best Practices in NMR Metabolomics: Current State” published in Trends in Analytical Chemistry (TrAC), and to the paper being highlighted on the cover of the journal.

The goal of SODA is to provide a community-driven resource of actively maintained software, test datasets used for software benchmarking, and results produced by the software.
The Software Data Exchange (SODA) is excited to announce two new initiatives: SODA Workshops and SODA Curated Software List!
-
In SODA Workshops, a presenter demonstrates real-time use of a metabolomics tool or process and the audience is encouraged to follow along. These will be recorded and the tools will be listed in our Curated Software List, along with other tools which are free and actively maintained. If you would like to have your software or service listed on our curated list, please do so here.
Our next SODA Meetup and Workshop are on April 9th and May 14th. To attend, join SODA by filling out this form, join our LinkedIn Group, and add our upcoming events to your Google Calendar. Also, we are looking for presenters! If you are interested please fill out this form. Hope to see you there!
