Why Do We Have an Annual Meeting?
The Episcopal Church is unique. We have the ancient Christian orders of Bishop, Priest, Deacon and Layperson but we also believe in the governance of all members of the church. We want the laity (that is you!) to know what is going on and to make decisions for your community. We want you to know how your Cathedral is doing, to celebrate our victories and mourn our losses. This is our church together, all of us.

This year, our Annual Meeting will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 6 in Taliaferro Hall and by Zoom meeting. You will hear from your Sr. Warden, Jr. Warden, Finance Committee Chair and Director of Operations about what we've accomplished and what we hope to accomplish. I will tell you a little bit about the adventures of 2021. We will pray for those who have died this past year. And we will celebrate the retirement of two beloved staff members: Judy Maurer and Marie Tarver. Both of these beautiful women will be present, so please consider joining us in person to honor and applaud them. If you would like to contribute to a purse to be given to each woman, please Give Here and write "Retirement gift for ____" in the memo. Gifts will be accepted through Feb. 10.

We will also thank our outgoing Vestry members: Jayne Barry Hill, Martha Greene, Laura Lane, Jane Lester, and Joe Kincart, and announce the results of the election.

The meeting should not last much more than one hour. This is your time. And if you want to hear about miracles, join us.

In Christ’s love,

Kate+

Celebrate the life and work of Absalom Jones
The Union of Black Episcopalians and St. John's Cathedral will remember The Rev. Absalom Jones in a special Holy Eucharist offered on Saturday, February 12 at 11 a.m. The service will be followed by an outdoor reception.

In 1794, Rev. Jones founded the first black Episcopal congregation, and in 1802, he was the first African American to be ordained as a priest in the Episcopal Church of the United States. He is listed on the Episcopal calendar of saints. He is remembered liturgically on the date of his death, February 13, in the 1979 Book of Common Prayer as "Absalom Jones, Priest, 1818."
New Beginnings deadline to register is Feb. 14
New Beginnings is designed especially to respond to the unique challenges and concerns of youth in grades 6-8. It was created by adults and young people to help participants grow in their love of themselves, others and our Lord Jesus Christ. During the weekend, participants meet peers from across the diocese, enjoy skits, listen to talks, and participate in small group activities and discussions. These activities focus on self, friends, parents, siblings, school, God's love, prayer and the church. Free time is built in for youth to have an opportunity to fellowship with their newfound friends. Participants of
New Beginnings may attend as many weekends as they choose throughout their middle school years.

Participants do not have to be Episcopalian, but must be a member or accompany a member of an Episcopal church. Participants do not need a sponsor for the weekend; there will be adults on team to help supervise the weekend. The registration fee for the weekend is $140. Contact Megan Cochran if you have any questions, to arrange transportation and so I know who is going. 632-9104 x 156 or (903) 233-9583
