Students participated in a collaborative discussion on media literacy with students in Finland. Creating a dialogue and understanding of media literacy is one of the ways the Social Studies Department helps its students learn to empathetically and accurately analyze political, historical and social issues from multiple perspectives.

Spotlight: Lillian Tidrick ’23

Accomplishments: Lillian Tidrick is a member of the Health Sciences Honors Program leadership team. She is also the recipient of the 2021 Lorraine Dodero STEM Goes Red for Girls Scholarship.

The Health Sciences Honors Program offers students the opportunity to explore various health sciences career opportunities through classroom learning, experiential learning, service learning and hand-on application without organizations. “It provided me with many opportunities throughout my time here. I have been able to go on many healthcare-related field trips and attend many guest speakers from various STEM fields, which has allowed me to narrow down my interests,” Lillian shared.

As a member of the program's leadership team, Lillian helps coordinate activities to promote it. One such activity was the prayer board in the shape of a tree to raise awareness of breast cancer. “To fill the tree, we gave students the option to write someone's name whom they are praying for on a breast cancer ribbon and pin it on a tree branch on the bulletin board,” Lillian shared.

As a recipient of the 2021 Lorraine Dodero STEM Goes Red for Girls Scholarship, Lillian will receive a four-year $5,000 scholarship for college. The scholarship, which started in 2019, is through the American Heart Association and Lorraine Dodero of the Sam J. Frankino Foundation for girls interested in pursuing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) careers. “I feel extremely honored to be a recipient of this scholarship,” Lillian shared. “Going to college is very expensive, so having this scholarship is a big help in my pursuit of a career as a nurse.”

Lillian has also volunteered at the Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital and University Hospitals. For her Junior Professional Shadowing Program experience, Lillian shadowed a nurse midwife at Neighborhood Family Practice.

Congratulations, Lillian!

Activities and Interests: At Saint Joseph Academy, Lillian is also a member of the leadership team for the Shelter Helpers Club and a member of the Glamour Gals Club.

Future career interests: Lillian committed to the nursing program at Xavier University. She is interested in pediatric or labor and delivery nursing.
