Four extraordinary stories of four extraordinary honorees
Save the date for the 2024 Gold Humanism Summit, taking place February 29 - March 2, in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Gold Humanism Summit — on the theme of The Person in Front of You — will convene our many community members to explore best practices and strategies to fuel change and inspire action. This interprofessional, international event will be focused on igniting humanism to create the tangible changes necessary to heal the heart of healthcare.

Stay tuned for information on how to submit an abstract (lecture, panel, workshop, poster) or artwork for our special art gallery.
Gold statement on Supreme Court admissions decision
The Supreme Court’s decision against race-conscious admissions threatens efforts to create a more diverse healthcare workforce. An abundance of research is clear that diversity in healthcare improves the health of patients. The Gold Foundation has stated unequivocally that humanism is intrinsically anti-racist, and we reaffirm our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism. We stand with our partners, AAMC and AACN, in denouncing this decision. Optimal health and optimal care require diverse care teams who reflect their communities.

The Gold Board of Trustees elected Dr. Patricia S. Sexton as its newest member in its June Board meeting. Dr. Sexton, who is the GHHS Advisory Council Chair-Elect, is the Associate Dean for Curriculum and Tenured Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at A.T. Still University, Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCOM).

A 2010 Leonard Tow award recipient, Dr. Sexton has over 30 years of experience in osteopathic medical education and research. She teaches in the areas of communication skills, bioethics, research ethics, health disparities, cultural humility, professional identity formation, patient safety, healthcare systems, and end-of-life issues.

The Gold Foundation is thrilled to introduce you to our 2023 Gold Student Summer Fellows, 13 medical students whose summer projects will address such issues as food insecurity for patients and youth in Palm Beach County, Florida; health education and social enrichment opportunities among adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in rural New Hampshire, sickle cell disease among the immigrant and refugee population in Baltimore, Maryland; and more.

Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi has been selected for the 2023 Vilcek-Gold Award for her leadership in the development of a patent-free open-source vaccine for COVID-19, and for her career-long work to support healthcare education and access in vulnerable populations globally.

The Vilcek-Gold Award is a shared initiative of the Gold Foundation and the Vilcek Foundation that embodies the missions of both organizations. The award is given annually to outstanding immigrant healthcare professionals in the United States and honors the positive impact that accessible, humanistic, and compassionate care has on public health.

The goal of this prestigious award is to emphasize, reinforce and enhance the importance of humanistic qualities among medical school students and faculty.

Open to physicians, nurses and other members of the healthcare team who practice in Canada or practitioners and researchers in health professions education in Canada, the award acknowledges the ideals of humanism and patient-centered care within the Canadian healthcare community.

Deadline: October 15, 2023
Three medical students and three nursing students were selected as winners of the 2023 Hope Babette Tang Humanism in Healthcare Essay Contest. Their essays will be published in AAMC’s Academic Medicine and AACN’s Journal of Professional Nursing.

This year’s winning essays tell stories about the power of human connection. They bring the reader into clinics, hospital rooms, and ERs, revealing delicate exchanges between caregivers and patients. They explore how kindness can transcend our differences, and how the smallest of gestures can mean everything in a difficult moment.

Hope Babette Tang-Goodwin, MD was an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, whose devotion and generosity to the care of the children and infants with HIV infection in New York City was an inspiration to her colleagues and her students. Her approach to medicine combined a boundless enthusiasm for her work, intellectual rigor and deep compassion for her patients. In sum, Dr. Tang-Goodwin was an exemplar of excellent, compassionate and respectful patient care.

The latest edition of the Jeffrey Silver Humanism in Healthcare Research Roundup features 11 recently published papers on humanism in healthcare, compiled by Dr. Bharat Kumar.

These papers tackle important questions, including:
  1. What barriers do first-year resident physicians experience in disclosing requests for accommodations?
  2. How has the COVID19 pandemic affected patient perceptions of the provider most involved in their care?
  3. Can peer-support groups help support physician well-being?
