For the first time, the Tennessee Economic Development Council, the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce Executives and the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce & Industry joined together for the annual Day on the Hill and winter conference on Wednesday, February 15th. This joint effort brought over five hundred people from across Tennessee to Nashville for the annual meeting and Legislative Reception. TEDC launched its 50th anniversary with a special commemorative logo and plans for the 50th year celebration.
Keynote speaker Governor Bill Haslam updated attendees on the latest happenings in the State Senate and in Congress. He provided insight into his gas tax plan, including how it would benefit the state of Tennessee by building and sustaining economic growth.
Ted Townsend, Interim Commissioner of Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development, spoke about corporate expansion and rural development across the state.
The two recipients of the Philip Trauernicht Memorial Scholarship for Rural Leaders were also recognized. Philip Trauernicht, a native Tennessean, dedicated his career to economic and community development. Last year's scholarship recipient was Dana Wilds with the Greene County Partnership, and this year's recipient is Lucas Graham from Cocke County.
The scholarship provides full tuition and lodging for the Tennessee Basic Economic Development Course held annually in Nashville. Donations to the scholarship fund can be made here.
