This Summer is going to be quiet the hot one! So, while we are dreaming of cooling off with an Aperol Spritz on the coast of Italy, we want to give you an update on what's been going on in our crazy world at Kat Nelson Designs! The industry is definitely still feeling the effects of you know what, but it seems like some of our lovely vendors are able to get those insane lead times "almost" back to normal. We are more than glad to call that a win in our book! When it comes to our clients we have 3 very exciting new builds in the works! One of those projects being in the Cashiers region of North Carolina. We love projects that allow us to adopt a motif that's different from our everyday designs and really have the ability to think outside of the box. Building a home from the ground up is definitely not for the faint of heart. The amount of decisions can feel overwhelming, but thankfully with Kat's patience, vision and expertise, she's able to make the process fun and enjoyable not only for her team, but also her clients!
There's a new kid on the block and let's just say we won't be mad if she's here to stay. Want to have that "Coastal Grandma" vibe? Let us give you the run down... It's all things beachy, lived in, refined, and comfortable. It's an elevated relaxed way of living. When it comes to fashion, it's linen, linen, and a lot more linen. Woven bags, loafers, oversized button downs, and straw hats are just a few of the staples you will need in your closet to help you look the part of the Coastal Grandma. In the home it looks like cozy lived in slipcovered furniture, light throws, rattan finishes, fresh fruit and flowers, all of the natural light to take in your views (even if you happen to not be on the beach) and most importantly, timeless. As trendy as it sounds, it can still be a haven that you will want to enjoy for a long time. The color palette is very neutral incorporating some of our favorite pseudo-neutrals like green and blue. Speaking of colors, they seem to have a "blown out effect". Later on in the newsletter, you'll hear us touch on biophilia. The Coastal Grandma look is designed with it in mind. Biophilic design is incorporating nature and it's environment into your interior and exterior spaces. Adding those traits will be at the forefront of things you can source to upgrade your home and make it feel like you have already retired. Pair it with some fresh baked cookies and by George, I think you've got it!
During the thick of quarantine when everyone was refreshing their homes we saw lots of bright colors and patterns. For most people it was a complete 180 from their comfort zones and norms of the style of their homes. We love "funking" up a space whenever we can. When it comes to some of our most recent client work we are noticing people reverting to those lived in and cozy colors. You can go as far as to say this warm summer has people yearning for light, cool and fresh interiors. Speaking of neutrals, we are noticing a use of heavy materialism. Lots of exaggerated texture, colors inspired by nature, and organic lines in furniture. This is not new by any means, but gone are the days of sharp corners and rigid lines in terms of the style of your furniture. There's this ebb and flow of clean and prominent pieces mixed in with art, styling pieces, and accent furniture that adds to the flow. This juxtaposition is so intriguing and has the ability to bring a space to life. Pair that with an interesting plant and "found" pieces or sentimental art, talk about a room refresh!
Stay well and Live Beautifully!

Feeling summertime fine. The weather has us dreaming of a European summer and what better dish to bring those vibes to your table than a delicious paella, Enjoy!
| |
- 3/4 lb of chorizo or spicy Italian sausage cut into 1" pieces
- 2 small boneless skinless chicken breasts or 1 medium size chicken breast cut up into bite size pieces
- 3/4 lb of peeled and deveined shrimp frozen or raw
- 1/2 cup diced onion
- 1 regular can of diced tomatoes
- 1 (15 oz) can of chicken broth
- 1 1/2 cups of Uncle Ben's converted rice
- 1 cup of frozen peas
- 2 Tbsp of olive oil
- Saffron (I use Spanish Saffron because it is cheaper, it comes in a small round disc container)
- Salt and Pepper
Heat olive oil in a large electric fry pan over medium heat. (If you don't have one, use an extra large Teflon coated fry pan). Sautee onions and sausage and chicken until cook through.
Add the chicken broth, diced tomatoes, rice and saffron; bring to a light boil. Cover and reduce heat to low for 15 minutes.
Add salt and pepper to taste. Stir in shrimp and frozen peas and return the cover to cook the shrimp and heat the peas through (approx. 5 minutes or so)
Enjoy with salsa or hot sauce, crusty French bread and a nice Rose'!
Enjoy!

W H A T 'S H O T?
Let's take a look into some of the hottest trends this summer!
| Designed by Grand Traditions Homes |
Let's dive right in, shall we? Starting off strong is the impact GREEN is having on us this
Summer, and I don't mean a few plants here and there, but the implementation of the color in the walls, drapes, accessories, everywhere! Not only is the color representative of harmony, tranquility, and peace. It is also the perfect pseudo-neutral! They say you learn something new everyday! Today, we will teach you about biophilia! Biophilia is the innate human response to incorporate nature into our environments. For example, indoor spaces that have large doors/windows create an overall sense of bringing the outdoors in, live plants that improve your indoor air quality, sustainable textiles, and so on. Not only are you making your space feel more lively, but they are great ways to be more eco-friendly within your home. By incorporating those elements your space will feel grounded and complete.
Let's talk about paint and how we think you shouldn't be afraid to put it everywhere... yes, that means the ceiling too! As we flip through our favorite magazines, we are noticing an overwhelming amount of spaces that are placing one color on the walls, trim, molding, ceiling, and electrical plates to create this moody, monochromatic, and cozy effect. Pair it with a gorgeous lighting fixture and just the right amount of styling and we guarantee, your space will have everyone swooning!
Last but not least, architectural elements are taking spaces like kitchens and baths by storm. Here at Kat Nelson Designs, we have a few projects that will be implementing fluted detailing on the front of the bathroom vanities. We can't wait to show you the results. In the kitchen, fluted backsplash and paneling for appliances are the perfect addition for those that want a bold and unique look, while also keeping it subtle. We know, bold and subtle? You'll just have to trust us on this one!

| Do you have a spare room in your home that you find yourself never in? Maybe it's your seldom used dining room that is now acting as a makeshift storage unit. Or maybe it's the formal living room with the furniture from the house you bought ten years ago and don't know what to do with it. We are happy to say we have come up with just the solution for you! We call them the "Conversation room" where the emphasis is not on the TV. In this space we like to keep the tech as minimal as possible to create a space that is inviting and harbor's a connection with your family and friends. Another reason we love these spaces is because they are places you can have fun with wallpapers, out of the box colors, funky patterns, etc. You are able to show off your families collections, heirlooms, all the things that bring you and your people joy. Gone are the days of the stuffy spare rooms that only get used for the holidays. It's time to reclaim those spaces in your home and transform them into a place memories can be made all year long! We often see these rooms lean more into a 'speakeasy' kind of vibe, but they don't have to be. This can still be the "Christmas tree" room, but updated with comfy seating and ample room for fun family pastimes like game night all throughout the year. If you have the space for it, a game table is a great addition to the space. One more great use of the conversation room is to incorporate a bar. It allows for a cozy, yet functional, space for an intimate group any time of the year. | |

The bed and the nightstands in this cool bedroom add so much texture and depth, due to the fact that the large scale furniture is made up of completely different materials. Paired with a soft drape and some light styling, this area becomes a gorgeous space!
So you want to refresh that guest bedroom? Our first tip would be avoid furniture sets. The main reason you are wanting to switch around your furniture is because it's probably lost it's interest. If you have a furniture set in multiple bedrooms, instead of going out and purchasing all new pieces. Try mixing and matching them. At this point, it's important to ignore the color/finish and see if the different style pieces work together. Once you have come up with a composition of furniture that you like now it's time to work on the color. Head to your local hardware store and find a color that speaks to you! Voila! A brand new space
