Sonoma Connect | Sonoma Unidos Partner Highlight: The Botanical Bus

The Botanical Bus is a bilingual mobile herb clinic that empowers holistic health by-and-for Latinx and Indigenous people. With Sonoma Connect | Sonoma Unidos collaborative American Rescue Plan Act funding, Botanical Bus will provide seven farmworker clinics with massage therapy, acupuncture, somatic therapy, diabetes support and prevention, foot care, clinical nutrition, art, and herbalism. Group care sessions are led by Promotora/CHWs. Clinical services are offered to clients on an accessible sliding scale. Every client receives a mutual aid care kit, which includes herbal salves for wound care and teas for stress relief, sleep and building immunity.

The Botanical Bus models healing-centered care in the following ways:

Their health services are mobile because residential segregation, by race and ethnicity, income, and occupation, is a social determinant of health (Lewis, 2021).

Botanical Bus currently offers services in Central, North, West and East Sonoma County at vineyard worksites, family service centers and schools.

Their health services are bilingual because 4 in 10 of the 29,000 undocumented immigrants residing in Sonoma County do not speak English (Lewis, 2021).

At the Botanical Bus Farmworker Clinics: 96% of clients identify as Latinx or Indigenous and 89% as Spanish speakers.

Their health services are bicultural because positive mental health outcomes can be better achieved through valuing cultural wealth (Adams & Chavez, 2016).

At the Botanical Bus Farmworker Clinics: 69% of clients report high levels of acute stress in the form of anxiety, depression and fatigue. Botanical Bus believes that this mental health crisis needs to be met with culturally centered care.

March is Women’s History Month

Did you know that the Women’s History Month began in Sonoma County?

The National Women’s History Alliance, was founded in Sonoma County. In 1978, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women initiated the first-ever “Women's History Week” celebration.

The weeklong celebration included school programs, speakers, an essay contest, and a parade held in downtown Santa Rosa. Hearing of the success of the Sonoma County program, several prominent women’s groups began lobbying for a national celebration — and in 1980, President Carter issued a Presidential Proclamation declaring the first-ever “Women's History Week” in early March of that year. In 1987, Congress declared March as National Women’s History Month in perpetuity.

Sonoma County Library celebrates National Women’s History Month with events, displays, and resources, such as those highlighted below. Help share in this annual tribute by celebrating and learning about the generations of women who influenced and enriched our nation and society.
