Dear Friends and Neighbors,
My office secured an indictment on charges of criminally negligent homicide against a woman in connection with a high-speed collision on the Cross Island Parkway that killed her cousin and left her aunt gravely injured.

The defendant was driving at 123 mph in a 50 mph zone as she approached a split in the highway on April 8, 2022. She failed to maintain her lane, entered a grass median and struck a guardrail, launching the vehicle airborne. The car rolled over several times before striking an overhead light pole and the gantry supporting an overhead road sign, coming to a final rest on its roof.

The backseat passenger was pinned inside the vehicle and later died of her injuries. The front passenger survived but sustained serious injuries to her lung, arm, shoulder, pelvis and liver.

Disregarding the rules of the road often has devastating consequences. When drivers choose to disobey traffic laws, they put everyone in danger, including themselves and their loved ones.

In this case, a life was cut short and a family left heartbroken because the defendant, as alleged, drove at nearly two-and-half times the speed limit.

My office will continue to prioritize cases of vehicular crimes to ensure that dangerous drivers are held accountable.

My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.

In Friendship,

Melinda Katz
Queens District Attorney

Cold Case
If you have information regarding unidentified male remains, found in Flushing 24 years ago, contact NYPD Crimestoppers by calling 800-577-TIPS, or through the online form.

It is never too late for justice.
Crackdown on Illegal Scooters
My office teamed up with the NYPD's 112th Precinct this week to seize 40 scooters illegally parked along Austin Street and Queens Boulevard in Forest Hills and Rego Park. Nearly all the scooters were unregistered and uninsured.

This crackdown comes on the heels of 250 scooters having been confiscated last month in Woodside, Long Island City, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Richmond Hill and Jamaica.

The persistent threat these mopeds present to community safety must be eliminated. We will continue our efforts to ensure compliance and safety for law-abiding New Yorkers.
St. Pat's for All Parade
It was a pleasure to join participants of the annual St. Pat's for All parade in Sunnyside and Woodside to celebrate the diversity of the Irish community.

Congratulations to the entire parade committee on celebrating the event's 25th anniversary this year! It continues to be one of the best St. Patrick’s Day parades in the city.
Street Co-Naming in Honor of the late Michael Simanowitz
I joined elected officials and community leaders over the weekend to honor the legacy of Assemblymember Michael Simanowitz, who made a tremendous impact in this borough.

The intersection of Main Street and 75th Avenue in Kew Gardens Hills has been officially co-named "Michael Simanowitz Way" in his honor.

The many community officials at the ceremony was a testament to Michael's tireless advocacy for his community and for Queens. His dedication and service will be remembered for generations to come.
International Women's Day

On this day, we acknowledge the progress that has been made towards gender equality, while also recognizing the work that still needs to be done to ensure that every woman has access to the same opportunities and rights as men.

We stand in solidarity with women everywhere and commit to working towards a future where gender equality is a reality for all.
