Would love to attend, but not interested due to other conflicts.

TOMORROW'S MILITARY AVIATORS

Matching Scholarships

The Daedalian Foundation matches up to $2,000 in Flight scholarship awards, and then adds another $1,000, allowing each Flight to receive up to $3,000. When a flight awards multiple scholarships, the Foundation's matching, up to $3,000, is done in accordance with flight instructions.

Cadet Michael Chang, AFROTC

San Diego Flight 13 Matching Scholarship

Flight $1,000. Foundation $2,000.

Junior at University of California-San Diego majoring in structural engineering.

Student Pilot with 7.5 hours. US PTO Patent, member of Arnold Air Society- Squadron Candidate Drill Instructor Team Lead, Cadet of the Month, Cadet of the Semester, Flight Most Outstanding Cadet (x2), Warrior Spirit Award, AFROTC Achievement Award (x3), American Veterans Award, Honor Flight, Veterans of Foreign Wars Award, Physical Fitness Award, and Academic Honors Award (x3).

Career goal: I hope to become a rescue pilot for the U.S. Air Force. Having grown up next to Moffett Federal Airfield, I always appreciated the 129th Rescue Wing training above our heads. With the recent constant wildfires edging closer to my neighborhood, I appreciate their work when I see them doing their part to fight the annual inferno. Having lost a home due to fire in the past, I know the power of a community to help people in need and I wish to be a rescue pilot to return the favor, whether it be Active Duty or National Guard units. I wish to do my part in “the things we do so others may live.”

Loren and Randy Spencer Scholarship

Harley H. Pope Flight 48 was selected to receive the Loren and Randy Spencer Scholarship for 2020. Four Daedalian flights are chosen annually based on the successful recruiting of new Daedalians for that year. Harley H. Pope Flight named Robert Denny for the $1,000 scholarship.

Cadet Robert Denny AFROTC

Flight $1,000. Spencer $1,000.

Junior at University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill majoring in economics and minoring in public policy and aerospace studies.

GPA is 3.9. Currently in charge of all cadet professional military training as the cadet Operations Group Commander. Member of Arnold Air Society Chapter at UNC-CH, where he has proven to be a productive member of the community through his various community service projects and his service on the UNC-CH Undergraduate Honor Court.

Career goal: “Upon graduation, I will commission as a 2nd Lt in the USAF where I will serve as either a Pilot, CSO, ABM, or RPA Pilot. I am still awaiting the results of my rated board. I am unsure of how long I will serve in the USAF, but I would like to make it a career.”

THE HANGAR HAPPENINGS

Last month, we launched our Summer Speaker Series as part of our virtual community, The Hangar, with the Executive Director of the Air Force Test Center, Col. (Dr.) Eileen Bjorkman. In 1985, the only way to make her dreams of flying fighters was to become a Flight Test Engineer. During the meeting, she shared some of her experiences testing the capabilities of many types of fighter aircraft and her role at the Pentagon analyzing air-to-air combat as well as air-to-ground. She also shared insights into how the role of women in the aviation community has evolved, tips for those interested in preparing for and pursuing a flight test engineering career, and a little of the cultural history of Edwards AFB and the ways the aviation community has remained connected there over the decades.

We were honored to host Col. (Dr.) Eileen Bjorkman, and have more exciting speakers planned for the rest of the year:

  • CAPT Greg "Chaser" Keithley, USN (Ret) on July 26 at 1900 CDT
  • Lt. Gen. S. Clinton Hinote, USAF on August 25 at 1830 CDT
  • Brig. Gen. Rico Aponte, USAFR (Ret) on September 19 at 1900 CDT
  • Gen. Mark Welsh, USAF (Ret) on September 26 @ 1600 CDT

Please see our website for more information on our speakers and to register for each event.
