On Tuesday, March 5, we sent TWO SHIPMENTS to Guatemala through our partner Food For The Poor (FFTP).
Guatemala is a country of about 16.5 million people in Central America. Although rich with culture and tradition, Guatemala greatly suffers from both natural and man-made disasters, along with poverty that plagues the country. Alongside FFTP, we respond to the needs they have within their crisis. According to FFTP, “Despite political instability and natural disasters, charity work and disaster relief are keeping millions of Guatemalans from a humanitarian crisis.”
The first semi-truck pulled into Midwest Mission shortly after 9 am, fitted with a 20-foot trailer that would hold the contents of our first shipment. This was an Angels of Hope shipment — all of the items included will go to children’s homes that FFTP serves through their Angels of Hope program.
This is the first Angels of Hope shipment of the year — and we have added more items than we sent last year.
After originally hearing about the great need for mattresses in Jamaica, we continued to hear about needs for mattresses in many of the countries FFTP serves. This led us to add more needed items to the Angels of Hope shipments. We have added mattresses (many donated from Illinois State University), Bed Packs (sheet set, pillow, and pillowcase), and Cover Them With Love Quilts (the size has been adjusted to 72”x42” to fit the twin size mattress). These items were shipped alongside the Personal Dignity Kits, Home Care Kits, and cleaning wipes that we have been sending for Angels of Hope shipments.
The value of this first shipment was $36,809.48.
