Updates from PSD!

PSD is excited about our many celebrations honoring Black History month! Our students are learning about the roles and achievements of Black Deaf people, Black people, and the importance of Black history in the United States. We are excited to celebrate the achievements, culture, impact, and contributions of African Americans to PSD and our country, and to recognize Black history not only this month but throughout the year.

The Family Resource Center at PSD is pleased to announce our second annual family conference:



"Thrive! Supporting Self-Advocacy and Self-Determination in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children."


This conference is open to any families with Deaf and Hard of Hearing children. Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 29th from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM at PSD! We have amazing workshop presenters lined up and we are especially honored to have Tia-Nikki Ivanko from the National Deaf Center as our Keynote Speaker.

The PSD Volunteer Program is ready to welcome new and reconnect with previous volunteers! Join or re-join our team to support the programs and activities of the school. Volunteer opportunities include support with class activities the library, Family Resource Center, special projects, community events, and more. Applications, PA State clearances and proof of COVID vaccination are required. American Sign Language (ASL) skills are a strong plus!

What You Need to Know About PA ABLE!

Fingerspelling Research Study: Recruiting Deaf Bilingual Families


We are seeking parents/caregivers who are fluent in ASL to help us document the use of fingerspelling with young children. At least one parent/caregiver must be deaf and fluent in ASL. Children may be deaf, hard of hearing, or CODAs.



Parents/caregivers who volunteer will:

  • Participate in an interview
  • Share how they use fingerspelling in the home
  • Assist in documenting the words that are fingerspelled


The goals of the research are to understand how fingerspelling is acquired and to create a chart of fingerspelling developmental milestones.


Families will receive a small honorarium for participation.

ASL Interpreted Shows at the Arden Theater:

Please confirm interest in advance of select 2023 dates.

The Arden Theatre (40 N. 2nd St., Philadelphia, PA 19106) is planning their ASL interpreted shows for this coming season. Ken Wesler at DHCC has offered to organize group tickets for interested families. Please email Ken at kwesler@dhcc.org to let him know if you are interested in attending so that tickets can be reserved. Please let him know what show you would like to attend, the date and the number of people attending. Any questions can be directed to Ken.

Group rates apply only to groups of 10 or more

  • $18 per ticket for performances on Tuesdays through Fridays
  • $20 per ticket for performances on Saturdays and Sundays
  • A 10:1 student-to-chaperone ratio is required for all groups with students under 15 years old. Complimentary tickets will be issued only to chaperones within the ratio requirement. 

ASL-interpreted Performances at People's Light:


THURGOOD (MARCH 12 @ 2 pm). is a riveting one-man performance about the life and times of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.  Recommended for ages 10 and up.


NOTE: When contacting the box office It is VERY IMPORTANT to make clear that seating is needed in the sight-line of the ASL interpreter.
