Happy New Year Betsy,

We are eager to start 2022 and share some exciting updates with you on what we are up to, reflecting on the immense work and success to move our mission forward in 2021.

As I sit here in snowy Michigan, and we are still impacted by the COVID pandemic, one of our greatest strengths has been the structure of our organization. As an "inside out" community that began everywhere vs. in one location, we have been tooled up to succeed even more so with a virtual world, but we are eager to see how we can connect in person this year as well. It is our hope that we can safely gather in regional groups for our third annual Hustle for Hope 5K.

Please look for more information to come in the next couple of weeks on registration, and please reach out to me if you are interested in helping with a regional low-key gathering group. Prior to COVID, we successfully hosted regional retreats for parents and families with the involvement of regional hosts. We hope to implement this model for the Hustle!

Our 2021 Impact Report highlights the work we accomplished in this last year, together. I invite you to take a look accessing it through the link below, and cannot thank you enough for your immeasurable support during my first year as Hope for HIE's Executive Director.

Here's to an equally amazing 2022 for our organization as we work towards improving the lives of children and families impacted by neonatal and pediatric-acquired HIE through Awareness, Education and Support.

Stay warm and healthy!

Betsy Pilon

Staff Welcome Graphics _Presentation _169__ _1_.jpg

Hope for HIE's Board of Directors made the decision to invest in expanding the organization's support resources for 2022. As a part of this program, we have welcomed Vanessa, Zinke, LCSW, as social worker for Hope for HIE. As a part of this role, Vanessa will work on the following:

  • Leading weekly video support groups with recurring monthly groups for newly diagnosed families and our loss families, as well as general support, topic-focused and various demographic groups.
  • Launching and managing the newly created Peer Support Mentor program, for newly diagnosed families, and families new to loss.
  • Managing intake referrals of new families, building out relationships with more NICUs, PICUs and referral sources.
  • Providing expertise to counsel Hope for HIE on trauma-informed practices and other opportunities to provide support for families.

For any new referrals to the Hope for HIE network, email Vanessa at vanessa@hopeforhie.org.

Organizational Updates

New Article Published in American Journal of Perinatology

Led by Dr. Anna Sagaser, and in conjunction with Betsy Pilon and Annie Goeller of Hope for HIE, Dr. Alexa Craig and Dr. Monica Lemmon, an article calling for trauma-informed care for HIE families in the NICU was recently published.

Hope for HIE families contributed to the survey study and we look forward to seeing how we can continue to advocate for key themes such as consistently naming the HIE diagnosis to families, involvement in decision making in the NICU, and involvement and improvement in care, communication and connection.
