Weekly Update
A Message from Principal Simpson
| | |
Dear Parents,
I need to start this weeks message with a huge shout-out to everyone involved in the production of "Matilda" last weekend. The cast! The crew! What a fabulous performance! Special thanks to Ms. Johnson, Mrs. Gelley, Mrs. Hinkle and Mrs. Pierce for helping the students to put on such a remarkable show. Also thank you to all of the parent volunteers who helped, as the show would not have been possible without all of you!
Each year at this time, we seek parent feedback on how things are going at BFA via the Parent Satisfaction Survey. In the past, we received feedback from parents that the survey was too long; and teachers told us they needed more time to address parent feedback. In response to those concerns, we split our annual parent survey into two surveys this year. Last December, we distributed the Fall Parent Survey, which surveyed parents regarding teachers and classroom practices. The Spring Survey focuses on the school's culture, climate, and operations. Please take a few minutes to fill out the Spring Satisfaction Survey.
Safety is always a priority at BFA. Part of our safety practices include routinely practicing each type of emergency drill; and at 2:30 p.m. next Tuesday, March 12, we will have our spring lockdown drill. This is the same drill that we did in the fall. There will be an increased law enforcement presence at the school as this drill involves the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and the Douglas County School District's security team. Please be aware that the school will be locked, and no one can enter or exit the building during the drill. We expect the drill to last approximately 20 minutes. Please plan ahead--if you need to pick up your students early that day, please come before 2:30 p.m. or between 2:50-3 p.m.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Mrs. Simpson

Congratulations to the Cast and Crew of "Matilda" |
Congratulations to the cast and crew of Matilda! They delivered two fantastic shows, and their hard work and dedication truly shone through. Thank you to all the students involved in the production for your commitment and for sharing your talent with the BFA community. We also extend our gratitude to the many parents and teachers who supported the show and made it possible – truly, it takes a village! Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
To those who attended the show and noticed some very tall performers, those were BFA alumni who graciously returned to our stage to perform with us. Their presence meant a lot to the cast, especially Ms. Johnson. Thank you to Kate Lobis, Brynna West, Lily Mackey, Sasank Vepa, Abby Potterfield, Bryn McDermott, Dallin Sarver, and Evan McDermott for your contributions.

US 85 and C-470 Construction Impact BFA |
As most of you know, there will be major construction work during the next week that will result in detours which will impact the drive to/from BFA. The demolition/construction at US 85 and C-470 is scheduled to take place from 7 p.m. on Friday, March 8, until 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 14. The recommended detours for this closure are roads that most all families use to get to/from school. Please plan accordingly, carpool with other parents when possible, and be patient. Below are helpful links with additional information:

Charity Week Begins Monday, March 11 |
For Charity Week this year, the Student Council chose to support the Colorado Cancer Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that focuses on treatment and palliative care, as well as medical research and education at the University of Colorado (CU) Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO.
Middle school Charity Week kicks off on Monday, March 11. Students can participate in fun, themed dress-up days all week, and we’ll close out the week with Middle School Dodgeball for Dollars on Friday, March 15.
Donations for the Colorado Cancer Foundation will be accepted via MySchoolBucks through Friday, March 15.
All students are invited to participate in the following themed days in support of Charity Week:
-
Monday, March 11: Formal Uniform Day – We’re taking class photos, so please remember to send your student to school in their Formal Uniform.
-
Tuesday, March 12: It’s a RED OUT! Let’s wear RED to show BFA’s support of the Colorado Cancer Foundation, the 2024 Student Council Charity Week recipient.
-
Wednesday, March 13: It’s RIBBON WEDNESDAY! Most all of us know someone impacted by cancer, so we invite students to show solidarity with their friends/family who have faced cancer by wearing the color commonly associated with that type of cancer. (See chart.) They can wear a shirt in the color of their choosing, or a full outfit. Alternatively, students can choose to simply wear a ribbon—but then they should be in their regular uniform.
-
Thursday, March 14: Students can wear their fabulous new 2024 Charity Week t-shirt with regular uniform bottoms!
-
Friday, March 15: It’s a Dress of Choice Day, and middle school students can participate in Dodgeball for Dollars.
Note: If your student wants to recognize those who have faced lung cancer, they should wear white instead of clear.
Thanks for supporting Charity Week!

Middle School Dodgeball for Dollars |
Middle School Dodgeball for Dollars will be held from approximately 8:30 a.m. - 3:20 p.m. on Friday, March 15, in the Thunder gym. Middle school students should bring their own lunch, and lunch will be held from noon – 1 p.m.
Middle School students who signed up to play have been invoiced through MySchoolBucks for $5 per player, per team. Please pay this invoice BEFORE Friday, March 15. Students may sign up to play on up to three teams but they need to choose a primary team in case their teams play each other.
Students who do not want to participate will go to a designated classroom for study hall.
We appreciate your support of this fun, Charity Week event!

PTO Virtues Awareness Program: Purity |
A new month and a new season are upon us. Spring is the season filled with renewal making it a great time to focus on the virtue of Purity.
The BFA interpretation of Purity is: Be pure in thought and deed. White lies, a little gossip, and small, mean words are painful and say more about you than about others. What you think about others is how you will treat them. Develop good thoughts and feelings toward all.
Being pure in our thoughts and actions can be tricky. Problems with friends, coworkers, and family are inevitable and the only thing we can control with certainty is the way that we react to the situation. As the world around us brings forth new life, let us strive to lead our students with a pure and positive attitude.

Mission:
Our mission is to create young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.
Vision:
Our students will excel academically through a challenging, sequenced curriculum that emphasizes math, science, the arts, and literacy. We will be a data-driven institution, focusing on individual students. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and leaders will be held accountable for the success of our school. Finally, we recognize that an education is incomplete without fostering social emotional development, character, sports, and nature.
13 Virtues:
Temperance, Silence, Order, Resolution, Frugality, Industry, Sincerity, Justice, Moderation, Cleanliness, Tranquility, Purity and Humility.
