We're excited to announce that the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects will be hosting the University's inaugural Research Week from April 17-21. The week will feature various presentations from students and faculty, including the 44th Annual Central California Research Symposium (below) on April 19. Among other highlights:

CCRS CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

Our deadlines are fast approaching for two major student research events. In addition to the CSU Student Research Competition (below), we’re gearing up for the 44th Central California Research Symposium, set for the Fresno State Library on Weds. April 19.


The Symposium’s Call for Abstracts is available online, with all applications due by Weds., Feb. 23. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to present. Late submissions will not be accepted. Applicants are invited to choose one of the following formats: 12-minute oral presentation, poster presentation or 3-Minute Thesis oral presentation. Each student may submit only one application as a lead author.

CSU STUDENT RESEARCH COMPETITION

Students from all disciplines are invited to participate in the 37th Annual CSU Student Research Competition, hosted by San Diego State University on April 28-29. Students must submit their application via InfoReady by Friday, Feb. 24.


Fresno State will send a maximum of 10 delegates to represent the campus. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us via email at studenteventsrsp@mail.fresnostate.edu

FEBRUARY 2023 MONTHLY AWARD REPORT

Joel Slade (Biology) and co-PIs Tricia Van Laar (CSU, Stanislaus) and Mario Banuelos received a three-year, $467,622 award for their NSF New Faculty Enhancement Grant titled, "Bird feeders in the city: The effect of urbanization on ecological immunology and microbiology in cardueline finches."

  • Katherine Waselkov (Biology), Emily Walter (Biology), John Pryor (Anthropology) and Brian Agbayani (Linguistics) received a $24,820 grant from CSU STEM-NET for their project, “Native Plants, Places and People in Central California: Linking STEM Education to Local Cultural and Linguistic Diversity.”


  • Gurreet Brar (Plant Science) received a $16,039 grant from the California Department of Food and Agriculture for his project, “CSU Enhanced production of disease-free citrus varieties using sustainable next generation indoor farming systems.”


  • Pei-Ying Wu and Heather Horsley (LEBSE) received a $23,100 grant from the UPLIFT‐CA (via CSU Sacramento) for their project, “PK‐3 Early Childhood Education Specialist Instruction Credential Preparation Program.”



  • Agnes Tuska (Math) received a $34,781 grant from UC San Diego (via University of California) for the CSU/UC Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project (MDTP).

  • Phillip Gonzales (Chicano and Latin American Studies) was appointed to the Binational of Central California 2023 Board of Directors.


  • Aly Tawfik (Civil Engineering) was appointed to the California Air Resources Board’s statewide Research Screening Committee.



  • Faculty Spotlight: Lorin Lachs (Psychology): "I am most proud of the research I conducted exploring the links between auditory and visual speech perception."


  • Jorge Pesantez (Civil Engineering) was selected by the editor of the American Society of Civil Engineers Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management to receive the 2023 Best Reviewer Award.

INTERNAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

The 2023-24 Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity (RSCA) Award cycle is now open! Funding is provided by both the Office of the Chancellor and Fresno State’s Provost’s Office.


The awards provide (a) mini-grants up to $5,000; (b) summer/winter pay up to $3,000; or (c) 3 units of reassigned time to support faculty research, scholarship and creative activity toward the disciplined quest for broadening human understanding.


Faculty are encouraged to use the activities and results from these awards to pursue external funding and to broaden the scope of their research, scholarship and creative activities. Applications close at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21. This is a firm deadline, and no late submissions will be accepted. Please contact your department for more information.

SPARC! AT FRESNO STATE

The Division of Research and Graduate Studies in collaboration with the Fresno State's United Nations Global Compact Steering Committee invite you to SPARC! (Sustainability Projects And Research Collaborations).


This forum is designed to create networking opportunities for researchers and inquiring minds across campus and to help ignite interdisciplinary connections for research, grant applications, and/or projects that address at least one of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 


Join us in igniting social, economic, and environmental justice research connections on Friday, March 17, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at the University Business Center. PIVOT/ORCID WORKSHOP

Learn more about Pivot-RP and ORCID at our next virtual workshop on Tues., Feb. 21, from 10-11 a.m. Pre-register online.


Pivot is a searchable database of external opportunities featuring approximately $50 billion of available funding from federal, non-federal, and international sponsors in all disciplines. The Pivot funding database is available to all Fresno State faculty, staff and students.


ORCID provides a persistent digital identifier (an ORCID iD) that you own and control, and that distinguishes you from every other researcher. You can connect your iD with your professional information — affiliations, grants, publications, peer review, and more. The next “ORCID Workshop for Researchers” webinar is set for Feb. 22 from 9-10 a.m.
