The Faculty Retreat will be held on Friday, April 8. Watch the Academy News for details and registration information. For now, please save the date on your calendar.

The Campus Free Speech and Free Expression Series will address the challenges of complying with the First Amendment’s right to freedom of speech and expression while maintaining a safe and inclusive campus. The series began with an overview of the legal principles of the First Amendment and how they apply to higher education settings (recording available). The following sessions will focus on free expression in and out of classroom settings. The sessions will be held virtually and each session will include case studies and opportunities for audience participation. See dates and times and add the sessions to your calendar.

A new Standards of Academic Performance (SOAP) policy was vetted and approved for implementation through Harper’s Shared Governance process in 2019; this new policy will begin in the Spring 2022 semester. Learn more using the link above.

Teaching in the Age of Disinformation

Shared by Kim Heinz, Coordinator of Library Collections

I often think about a headline that ran last January in The Chronicle of Higher Education, “Teaching in the Age of Disinformation: Propaganda and Conspiracy Theories Are Everywhere. What’s a Professor to Do?” (To read the full article, select Harper College as your institution and log in with your Harper College username and password.)

Great question. Media literacy might be an overdue conversation in your circle but is a connection that we all now have. It’s tough, invigorating, and frankly, required teaching.

There’s a documentary entitled, TRUST ME, that I have incorporated into my media literacy sessions with students this semester. “The documentary explores human nature, information technology, and the need for media literacy to help people trust one another, bring them together and create a more resilient population.” The response has been phenomenal. Watch it. Get your students to watch it. And ask a librarian how information literacy can be worked into your courses. Can’t wait to continue this conversation with you!

Not sure if you’re ready to commit to one of the two-week online courses? Read some feedback about the courses from fellow Harper faculty:

  • “I have never been a student using Blackboard, so it was wonderful for me to actually work through materials and modules as my students do.”
  • “There was a diverse selection of content as well. All of the suggested processes and tools are readily implemented. This class makes a real difference.”
