One Cancer, Two People
Those of you who have been reading my blog for a while may remember a posting from nearly three years ago, where I described the plight of our dear friend Sandy, who had just been diagnosed with metastatic gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma. She had some abdominal pain, and a CT scan showed a GE mass and liver metastases. I wrote about the value of “showing up” for the people we care about, fully expecting that we might not ever see her again. I am happy to write today that I was wrong.

Jeanne Mandelblatt Named to Ewing Chair
Jeanne Mandelblatt, MD, MPH, has been named the holder of the Frank M. Ewing Foundation Endowed Chair. Established in 2018, the Ewing Chair recognizes and supports an outstanding leader and researcher at Georgetown Lombardi. Mandelblatt is the founder and inaugural director of the Georgetown Lombardi Institute for Cancer and Aging Research and a tenured professor of oncology at Georgetown University School of Medicine. All physicians, nurses, researchers, staff, residents and fellows are invited to submit abstracts for the 2022 MedStar Health–Georgetown University Research and Education Symposium, to be held in-person on October 3 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center. Abstracts are due at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, August 8. Only abstracts selected by the Scientific Review Committee will be presented as posters during the event. View more symposium information. American Cancer Society Extramural Discovery Science Grants Workshop
The American Cancer Society (ACS) hosts a webinar focused on its Extramural Discovery Science Grants on Wednesday, August 10, 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. to provide an orientation to the funding mechanisms available for the April and October application cycles. ACS Extramural Grant Program staff members Nicole Lopanik, PhD, and Lynn Elmore, PhD, discuss eligibility requirements and other program features and provide insights for preparing a successful application. GUMC Faculty Mentoring Program: Call for Applications for September 2022 Cohort
The GUMC New and Early Career Faculty Mentoring Program is open for applications for a new cohort of 20 mentees and five pod leaders. Attend virtual open houses on July 13 at 9 a.m. and July 19 at 5 p.m. to learn more about the program, what mentees can expect, and what qualifications are needed to be a pod leader. Small Business Transition Grant
The Small Business Transition Grant supports university researchers who would like to transition their career path from academia to a small business setting. This funding opportunity provides $400,000 as a Phase I STTR award and up to $2 million after transitioning to a Phase II SBIR. Proposed projects must fit into at least one of the following categories:
- Therapeutics and Preventative Agents
- Imaging Technologies, Interventional Devices, and In Vivo Diagnostics
- In Vitro and Ex Vivo Diagnostics and Prognostics
- Cancer Prevention and Control, Supportive Care, and Survivorship
To help facilitate the transition from junior academic scientist to entrepreneur, the selected grantees are required to secure mentoring. Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation 2022 Medical Research Awards
Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation funds promising physician scientists who are applying novel and state-of-the-art techniques to address fundamental problems in the genesis and treatment of blood related cancers. Applications for this year’s grants are welcome from two junior faculty members at Georgetown Lombardi – one who is conducting mainstream or conventional research and one who is conducting complementary or integrative research. Projects will be funded for a three-year period at $75,000.00 per year. View grant guidelines and application (view application as a Word doc).
