March Stewardship Message

Contentment is accepting what God provides with a sense of peace and serenity.

“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.”

(Phil. 4:11)

Stewardship: A Living Faith

Contentment has been defined as “accepting what God provides with a sense of peace and serenity.” Recognizing that all we have comes from God, the Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, his young son in the faith, that “there is great gain in godliness combined with contentment.” That’s why he went on to write that we should be content if we have food and clothing.

Christians who daily demonstrate contentment and satisfaction with God’s provisions are able to do two things. First, they can “make the most of the time.” Unencumbered with what scripture calls “the cares of this world,” they can concentrate on seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness. Second, although they may try to improve their lots in life, their basic contentment lets them enjoy the journey.

When the “memory book of life” closes for you, will you be able to look back with satisfaction on the journey that God has enabled you to take, or will you regret that you spent too much time and energy “fussing” about things that really didn’t matter? And will you regret that your discontent prevented you from serving the Lord in a greater way here at Faith Lutheran?

Visitors Offered Faith Worshippers the Opportunity to Support Holy Land Christians

Shady and Feda Hannona from Bethlehem visited Faith March 3 to share information about the hardships that Christians and others currently experience in the Holy Land.

They brought a variety of olivewood religious carvings that were handmade by Christian families in Bethlehem. Proceeds from our purchases of those items will help support Bethlehem families.

More than 70 percent of the Christian families in the Holy Land depend on tourism for income. But tourism in Bethlehem has plummeted, and access to other sources of income has been sharply curtailed due to war and other restrictions. As a result, many Christian families have fled the Holy Land and, today, Christians represent less than 1 percent of the population. Our support will help Christians remain in the land of Christ.

Thanks to Faith Youth and Sponsors for Breakfast, Offering of Letters

Heartfelt thanks to the Faith Youth Group and their sponsors for preparing and serving a hearty breakfast this past Sunday, for the opportunity to support upcoming youth activities, and for the chance to participate in Bread for World’s Offering of Letters, through which we signed letters to our member of Congress who can to enact policies and programs to end hunger. Those letters were hand delivered to Congressman Steube's office!

Wanted: A Donated Vehicle

A dear member of Faith has discovered that her car is no longer safe to drive. If you or anyone you know has a car that is not being used and might want to donate it to her, please contact Pastor Eric, pastor@faithlutheransrq.com 716-352-0055. Thank you for your kind consideration.

Sunday School Seeks Helpers

Following the Children’s Sermon during the 10:15 a.m. service, Director of Family and Child Ministry Deborah Dornemann and volunteers help young people learn about the gospel of the day through age-appropriate lessons and fun activities. The children rejoin the congregation for Holy Communion. Could you help with Sunday School? Contact Deborah, familyandchild@faithlutheransrq.com, to express interest and learn more.

Accept the Challenge! Help Create Personal Care Kits

Experts with Lutheran World Relief (LWR) say that personal-care kits make a profound difference for people struggling with poverty. LWR has challenged us to react to that fact with compassion, and the women of Mary Circle are leading the effort.

During Lent, please donate bath-size towels, metal nail clippers, 4-5 oz. bars of soap, combs and adult-sized toothbrushes. Don’t have time to shop? Monetary contributions to Faith designated for “personal care kits” are welcome. During 2023, Mary Circle created 60 kits. Can we donate enough for 70 this year? Thanks for responding generously.

Consider Donating Altar Flowers in Honor or Memory

Please consider donating altar flowers in honor of a special occasion, in memory of a loved one or to glorify God.

The cost is $30 for one vase or $60 for two vases. For each week, we can have either one donor for both vases, or two donors for one vase each. Make checks payable to Faith Lutheran Church, and indicate "altar flowers" in the memo line.

Check the altar flowers donation board in fellowship hall to see if your desired date is available. If not, please choose an alternate date. The next open date is Sunday, March 24.

When you purchase altar flowers, your name and dedication will be published in the bulletin on your selected Sunday. To make a dedication:

  • At church, complete an Altar Flowers envelope with your payment, and place it in the offering plate. Indicate your wish to keep or donate the flowers on the donation board in fellowship hall. You also can include a note in the envelope with your donation or call the church office.
  • By mail, send payment with a note indicating your desired date and dedication, and if you want to keep the flowers or donate them.
  • By email or phone, contact the church office with your desired date and dedication, and whether you want to keep or donate the flowers. Pay through the altar flowers option on the Faith website.

If you have specific requests about who or what facility should receive donated flowers, contact Judi Melander, judimelander629@gmail.com or 941-927-2502.

We Pray for Humility and Generosity

Find daily Prayer Ventures on the ELCA website. Here are prayers for today and the days ahead.

3/8 “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer” (Psalm 19:14). Praise God for being attentive to our thoughts, prayers and lamentations — spoken and unspoken.

3/9 Thank God for the ELCA’s special relationship with The Episcopal Church, a full communion partner since 1999. Pray for the church, its members and its leaders, that together we will find strength, resources and encouragement for the work of sharing the gospel, serving our neighbor and growing the church.

3/10 Pray that we will clearly see God’s relationship with humanity and the implications for our daily life when we reflect on the familiar proclamation Jesus made: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life” (John 3:16).

3/11 Ask God to bless the Young Adults in Global Mission volunteers working alongside our companion churches and organizations in six countries around the world and in the Cambodia program, which will reopen this year.

3/12 Give thanks for the food we receive and for those who grow, manage, harvest and prepare our food resources. Promise to respond to the needs of our neighbors and siblings in Christ who are hungry, and pray that the work we do together through ELCA World Hunger will have a deep and sustained impact.

3/13 At the heart of our faith is the belief that, though we are weak and imperfect, we are saved from ourselves and given new life though God’s gift of grace in Jesus Christ. Lift up humble prayers of thanksgiving to God!

3/14 Pray for the ELCA Justice for Women program, which helps us work from our faith and Lutheran theology to educate, advocate for change and lead into the future, addressing sexism and encouraging all genders to work together.

3/15 Sing for joy and give thanks to God for providing comfort in times of distress, healing us when we are broken and reassuring us that we are valued when we feel insignificant.
