Radio Canada International Indigenous and Regional Cooperation Emphasized at Russia’s First Senior Arctic Officials’ Meeting

"Today's meeting was an opportunity for the participants in the Arctic Council to discuss and advance the program of the Russian Chairmanship and begin the implementation phase of the Arctic Council first strategic plan, adopted in May the Reykjavik Ministerial Meeting ", said Ambassador Nikolay Korchunov, Chair of the SAO group.

In a First, Alaska’s Arctic Waters Appear Poised for Dangerous Algal Blooms

Researchers in Alaska’s Chukchi Sea region have found massive numbers of a tiny dinoflagellate called Alexandrium catenella lurking in a largely inert state on the seabed. The microorganisms, which have never before been mapped in such large numbers in Alaska’s Arctic, produce algal blooms known as red tides that carry a toxin that is potentially fatal to people and marine wildlife. The discovery is concerning for those living in an area where human diets and economies are wed to the ocean.

More Icebreakers Coming to Aid Russian Arctic Ships in Need

The Arktika on the 30th of November left St.Petersburg where it has undergone technical upgrades, and is due to arrive in Sabetta, Yamal Peninsula, on the 7th of December. The powerful icebreaker, Russia’s first LK-60 vessel, on the 1st of December sailed out of the Gulf of Finland, shipping data from MarineTraffic show.

Sikuliaq Returns: November 2021 Report from the North

This November, the R/V Sikuliaq conducted its last northern research expedition for the year. Sikuliaq visited and serviced a number of year-round submerged data collection sites in the Northern Bering and Chukchi seas. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to get first-hand accounts from the lead scientists on their work and what they saw so late in the season. Seth Danielson is an associate professor at UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. Jackie Grebmeier is a professor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. This event is part of the Strait Science Series.

2nd Symposium on Polar Microbes and Viruses

Organizers announce, that due to the coronavirus outbreak, the 2nd Symposium on Polar Microbes and Viruses has been postponed to 2022. This symposium will bring together molecular microbial ecologists specializing in different organism groups to share our latest results and discuss methodological problems, as well as future prospects in the field, including practical international collaborations. The environmental focus will be on cryospheric environments including sea ice, glaciers, ice sheets, and permafrost, but excellent research in other polar environments is also invited. The methods to be discussed will focus on 'omics' techniques, ranging from single cells to metagenomes, but research using additional methods is encouraged as well.

Participants will include scientists and engineers, Indigenous leaders, Arctic community members, policymakers, government organizations and businesses to celebrate past research success, take stock of current challenges and opportunities and plan for the next generation of collaboration and knowledge co-production that will keep Utqiagvik and Indigenous knowledge at the forefront of Arctic science and contribute to a safe and sustainable future for

the Arctic.
