Middlesex Health’s new Burris Center for Integrative Medicine is now open.
Integrative medicine is a holistic medical approach that takes into account a patient’s lifestyle habits. The mind, body and soul are taken into consideration to promote health and well-being.
The services offered at the center aim to address both physical and emotional symptoms of chronic conditions, such as digestive disordered and diabetes. Integrative medicine can also alleviate pain associated with cancer therapy and alleviate general symptoms of stress and anxiety. Middlesex’s goal is to help a person feel well in mind, body and spirit.
Services offered include acupuncture, reflexology, massage, nutrition counseling, lifestyle medicine, mental wellness and osteopathic medicine.
The new space features treatment rooms for various modalities, mental wellness consultations and nutrition counseling and a larger room for a variety of group programs.
Middlesex Health has offered integrative medicine services for many years. This expansion allows all services to now be offered at one Middletown location with ample space – the Burris Center for Integrative Medicine. Integrative medicine services will also continue to be offered in Westbrook.
Integrative therapy is not always covered by medical insurance. Anyone can make an appointment to benefit from the therapies offered. You do not need a referral from a medical provider.

Middlesex Health recently became the first health system in New England to use the Globus Excelsius3D™ intraoperative imaging device.
It began using the state-of-the-art device in early July during spine surgeries. However, the technology can also be used during other, general orthopedic surgeries as well.
This technology is important because it offers superior enhanced imaging. It also combines three imaging modalities (cone-beam CT scan, fluoroscopy and digital radiography) into one piece of equipment, minimizing the equipment needed in the operating room and decreasing the amount of time a patient is in surgery.
In addition, Globus Excelsius™ works in tandem with Globus’ ExcelsiusGPS™, which Middlesex began using in 2018 to view patient anatomy in real time during minimally invasive spine surgeries. Together, the technology is designed to improve the accuracy when placing implants, lower radiation exposure, and shorten the length of a surgery.

Middlesex Health’s orthopedic surgeons represent private orthopedic practices in Middlesex County and along the Connecticut shoreline. They treat a variety of orthopedic conditions and use the latest technology to ensure the best possible outcomes.
If surgery is needed, surgeries are performed in state-of-the-art operating rooms at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown. These operating rooms are specifically designed to accommodate orthopedic surgeries. Some surgeries may also be performed at an outpatient surgical facility, also located in Middletown.

Many men have an enlarged prostate. It is a common medical problem that can greatly impact their quality of life, possibly preventing them fully emptying their bladder and causing other issues.
For the last half century, transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), a surgical treatment, has been commonly used to help those with an enlarged prostate. TURP has been the gold standard of treatment. It uses a camera through the urethra and an electric current to shave out prostate tissue.
Now, however, there is a new treatment option available at Middlesex Health: Aquablation therapy. This procedure has been described as a game changer — a new and innovative way to help men with enlarged prostates.
Aquablation therapy uses real-time ultrasound and high-velocity water jets to treat lower urinary tract symptoms due to an enlarged prostate. The jets remove prostate tissue allowing urine to flow more freely.
Middlesex Health began offering Aquablation therapy in March, making the health system the first in the area to offer this therapy from PROCEPT BioRobotics Corp.
The Benefits
While effective and frequently used, TURP can only be used on certain size prostates.
A number of other technologies have been introduced to help men with an enlarged prostate, all of which apply some sort of energy, such as laser, heat, steam, to the inside of the prostate to open the channel. All of these other technologies have limitations.
Aquablation therapy can be used on most prostates, including very large ones. Compared to Aquablation, a TURP results in a longer recovery period. It may also cause more prostate bleeding, possible thermal injury to the prostate and ejaculatory dysfunction.

On June 1, Middlesex Health raised the progress pride flag in honor of Pride Month and the Juneteenth flag in recognition of the end of enslavement in the United States. Middletown Pride, the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce, Middletown’s LGBTQIA+ Commission and state Senator Matt Lesser attended the ceremony.
This flag ceremony demonstrates our commitment to creating a culture where patients and employees — no matter their race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation — are valued and feel that they are welcome and belong.
In addition, Middlesex both sponsored and participated in Middletown PrideFEST on June 4. To celebrate Juneteenth, we participated in Middletown’s Juneteenth Festival on June 18. As an organization, we also celebrated Pride Month and Juneteeth throughout our facilities.
