SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION | |
EASTERTIDE THOUGHTS
The Book of Ruth is one that challenges the original audience’s and our preconceived notions of who is and who is not included in God’s story. During the time of the judges, where this book is set, it is stated that no Moabite person was permitted into the temple life in Israel. And yet, what we see over and over again in Ruth is that God is providing and blessing the foreigner and the outcast. To the point that everyone in town praises her for being the Eshet-Chayil, this woman of worth and valor. So as we conclude this short book this week, we get to hear more about the ways that Ruth and Naomi stories are flipped from empty to full, from bitter to praising, and from death to new life.
Yours In Christ,
Brandon

The Colorado River basin, one of the most important western water sources for people and wildlife habitats, is now at a breaking point due to an ongoing, multiyear drought. Lake Mead, an essential drinking-water source for Arizona, California, and Nevada, has hit its lowest level since the reservoir was built in 1937. As a result, communities from the river's headwaters in the Rocky Mountains to its end at the Gulf of California are facing water shortages. Such problems may seem insurmountable, but we know what can help. Our greatest strength is one of our most important allies in the climate fight: nature itself.
We know that forest restoration supports natural carbon sequestration, protects people and wildlife from catastrophic wildfires, and nurtures watersheds that sustain both people and wildlife. We also know that healthy grasslands and prairies prevent erosion, absorb carbon, filter water, and support iconic species such as monarch butterflies. Helping species adapt to a changing environment and returning native species such as bison to their historic ranges can help make ecosystems more resilient and support clean drinking water for people and wildlife. Progress is not only possible, but also inevitable—when we work with Mother Nature. (GSN #149)

CAMPO IMPERATORE
"LITTLE TIBET" ITALY
LUMINA SENSE (March 2019 | 7:52 min)
Campo Imperatore ("Emperor's Field") is a mountain
grassland or alpine meadow
formed by a high basin shaped
plateau located above Gran Sasso massif, the largest plateau of Apennine ridge. Known as "Little Tibet", it is located in Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, near
L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy.
Campo Imperatore is also home to the Alpine Botanical Garden of Campo Imperatore. Founded in 1952, the garden is devoted to cultivation and study of some 300 species indigenous mountainous plants, including rare and endangered plant species, among them Vaccinium gaultherioides, Yellow Gentiana (Gentiana lutea), Edelweiss of the Apennines (Leontopodium nivale), and Adonis distorta, all plants that have adapted to Campo Imperatore's environment.
Campo Imperatore is also the habitat for the Apennine wolf, Apennine wildcat and the Abruzzo chamois. Nearly extinct, the latter is making a comeback through a joint effort by WWF Italia and the administration of the Gran Sasso National Park. Other species of wildlife include wild boar, foxes, grass snakes, and a wide variety of bird life including golden eagles and peregrine falcons.

Jesus the Sage: The Pilgrimage of Wisdom
By Ben Witherington III
(223/WIT)
The path of wisdom from Solomon to Jesus and from Jesus to the church In the early Jesus movement, wisdom in the person of Jesus was believed to have returned to heaven, exalted to the right hand of God, and to reign from there. But Jesus as wisdom had left both his legacy and his influence behind. The sayings of Jesus recorded in the Gospels reflect not only the influence of the Israelite wisdom traditions, but also the tradition of the personification of wisdom.
In this provocative volume newly available in paperback, Ben Witherington provides both an introduction to Israel's wisdom traditions and insight into how Jesus and his sayings fit in that tradition. Beyond this, he demonstrates the on-going significance and influence of these traditions on other New Testament writings. He concludes that Jesus may be viewed primarily as a prophetic sage emphasizing instruction, insight, and humor in a vein counter to the dominant culture.
