USDA NASS Reports on California Grape Acreage
The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service released its annual Grape Acreage Report for 2021. Based on survey responses, the total estimated grape acreage in 2021 for California was 881,000 acres, of which 829,000 were bearing while 52,000 were non-bearing. Wine-type grape acreage is estimated at 615,000 acres, of which 575,000 were bearing and 40,000 were non-bearing.

According to Jeff Bitter, president of Allied Grape Growers, "When I examine the NASS report, I usually find the actual data reported for the coastal districts look pretty accurate, but the data for interior districts is less reliable due to underreporting." However, Bitter said the overall estimated acreage numbers reported by NASS usually track closely with Allied's estimates.
California Will Keep Workplace Pandemic Rules Through 2022
The Associated Press is reporting the California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board decided to extend mandatory pay for workers affected by the coronavirus through the end of 2022, acting more than two months after state lawmakers restored similar benefits through September.
Proposed Neonic Regulation Threatens Vineyards
The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) is charged with the job of evaluating and registering all pesticide products before they are permitted for sale or use in the state. Often, DPR imposes more restrictive requirements on labeled uses of pesticides than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

DPR has planned a public hearing for next week to receive comments on the department’s proposed regulation to substantially limit the use of neonicotinoids (neonics), an important class of pesticides. The proposed regulation would effectively eliminate the use of neonics for managing glassy-winged sharpshooters (GWSS), mealybugs and other pests that threaten California vineyards. CAWG, Wine Institute, Family Winemakers of California and several regional wine industry organizations oppose the proposed regulation and are seeking amendments to allow the use of neonics to fight highly damaging and difficult to control pests like GWSS.

Growers are encouraged to participate in DPR’s hearing on Monday, April 25, 2022 at 9:15 a.m. ZOOM LINK  Webinar ID: 868 4348 8418 Password: 213892

Relentless in her efforts to educate and help growers and wineries who have been challenged by wildfire smoke issues, Oberholster has excelled as a researcher and educator. CAWG appreciates all she has done for California’s winegrowers.

We hope to see you in Sacramento on April 26.
COVID-19 Vaccine Requirements Extended for Non-U.S. Persons Travelers Entering the U.S.
Today, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced it will extend temporary Title 19 requirements and continue to require non-U.S. travelers entering the United States, via land ports of entry and ferry terminals at the U.S.-Mexico and U.S.-Canada borders, to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide related proof of vaccination upon request. These requirements may be of interest to ag operators who employ workers who make border crossings. The requirements do not have an expiration date and will stay in effect until such time as the President's Proclamation 10294 is withdrawn. DHS indicates there will be no expansion of exemptions for essential workers. The requirements do not apply to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents, or U.S. nationals.

The National Center for Farmworker Health has two handy guides on entry requirements in English and Spanish.
Solano County Eradication of GWSS Infestation Progresses
Last October, a glassy-winged sharpshooter infestation was discovered in a residential area of Vacaville, Solano County. Five adults were found October 1, 2021 in traps set as part of a routine trapping program to detect the pest. In response to the initial find, more traps were set in the area and another 45 GWSS were found, and egg masses were also detected during visual survey of plant material in the area.

Soil treatments at residential properties are underway to eradicate the glassy-winged sharpshooter population. The Solano County Agriculture Department and the grower supported CDFA Pierce’s Disease Control Program are working to eradicate the infestation using visual surveying, trapping, treatments, and biological control. Over 92% of residential properties in the area have been treated since October 2021, and additional surveying and release of parasitic wasps for biological control are planned. The Solano County infestation is the only current infestation north of the Madera area in California's Central Valley.
