Elmo Peeler Note-for-Note Piano Transcriptions | | |
Dear Elmo,
Today is the first day of February and time again for my monthly newsletter, to keep you informed of recent transcriptions and other news of the last month.
| |
Joe Zawinul in his
pre-Weather Report days
| |
Well, I've finally finished an important new note-for-note transcription of jazz-rock genius Joe Zawinul performing a long (4:17) acoustic piano jazz-blues improvisation from 1963 - great right-hand lines, creative left-hand chord voicings - amazing, sophisticated, nuanced pianism. Truly an exceptional player!
Also, this month kicks off with a brand-new exercise that will help you become more comfortable playing "yodeling 6ths". But as my old friend Ron Davies might have quipped, "it ain't easy."
BTW, to make sure that my email doesn't end up in your Spam folder, please add me to your Contact list and/or mark my email as "Not Spam".

In the News! - Joe Zawinul - Jazz Fusion Genius
Old School Acoustic Jazz/Blues Piano - Before Going Electronic
| |
Born in 1932, Joe Zawinul grew up in Vienna, Austria with accordion as his first instrument (as it also was for Roy Bittan and Jimmie Haskell).
Astonishingly, by age seven he was studying at the Vienna Conservatory (piano, violin, clarinet). During his twenties he was a staff pianist for Polydor, and worked as a jazz musician with Friedrich Gulda and other notable Austrian jazz instrumentalists.
At 27 he moved to the U.S. to attend Berklee College of Music, but a week later received a job offer from Maynard Ferguson, so he left school and went on tour, and then accompanied Dinah Washington.
He spent most of his thirties with Cannonball Adderley. During this time he wrote "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy", "Walk Tall" & "Country Preacher" and played electric piano.
| |
|
In 1969 and 1970 he recorded two of Miles Davis' seminal albums, In a Silent Way & Bitches Brew.
Also in 1970 at the age of 38 Zawinul founded Weather Report with Wayne Shorter. The band's biggest commercial success came from Zawinul's composition "Birdland" on the 1977 album Heavy Weather, which peaked at number 30 on the Billboard pop albums chart. "Birdland", which won him three Grammys, is one of the most recognizable jazz pieces of the 1970s, recorded by The Manhattan Transfer, Quincy Jones, Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich and others.
In 1988 The Zawinul Syndicate, a jazz fusion band, was formed.
In 1991, Zawinul was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music. BTW, after Eastman while working as a session player/arranger in Jackson, Mississippi in my early 20s before moving to L.A., I myself completed the Berklee Correspondence Course - although a far cry from being awarded an Honorary Doctorate, I'll be the first to agree. :)
In 1993 Zawinul composed a seven-movement symphony, called Stories of the Danube. It was recorded in 1995 by the Czech State Philharmonic Orchestra.
And if all that were not enough, he was named "Best Electric Keyboardist" twenty-eight times by DownBeat magazine. Sadly, in 2007 Zawinul passed away in his native Vienna.

February's New Transcription - Joe Zawinul - 4-minute-long Jazz-Blues Acoustic Piano Improv
Note-for-Note Accuracy
| |
|
This month I'm pleased to offer a brand-new note-for-note transcription of a long (4:15), jazz/blues improvisation played by Joe Zawinul on acoustic piano, accompanied by drums and string bass.
Zawinul, named "Best Electric Keyboardist" twenty-eight times by DownBeat magazine, began his musical studies at the age of seven at the Vienna Conservatory and went on to record to seminal Miles Davis records in 1969/70 and found Weather Report, inventing the jazz fusion genre along the way.
Well, back in 1963 at the tender age of 31 he had not yet made the transition into electronics and was still wailing away on acoustic piano with the Cannonball Adderly Sextet and with a trio that included two other Adderly Sextet members (bass & drums).
| |
One of those trio performances was videotaped, a nice long (4:17) improvisation on an 8-bar jazz/blues phrase alternating with a second 8-bar jazz/blues phrase. That 16-bar 2-section grouping repeats five times.
This new transcription not only includes the entire piano part but also the string bass part (played by Sam Jones), so that if you have a bass player friend, he can play note-for-note along with your own performance of Zawinul's part.

February's New Exercise - Yodeling 6ths - Chromatically Ascending & Descending
Increase Strength, Stamina & Independence in the 4th & 5th Fingers
| |
This month my brand-new technical "Exercise No.2 in Yodeling 6ths" is challenging, but it's fun to play and will definitely increase the strength, stamina and independence of your 4th & 5th fingers.
A "yodeling 6th" is usually a broken 6th preceded by a minor 2nd, e.g., D#, E, C. In this exercise there is no minor second but there are lots of "up & down" broken 6ths.
This exercise of ascending and descending chromatic broken 6ths contains four sections: A,B,A,C, which correspond to Verse, Chorus, Verse, Out, for a total of 36 bars.
The fingering is included throughout.
The Left Hand is a simple boogie-woogie pattern, easy enough that you can concentrate on the Chromatic 6ths in the Right Hand.
The fingering is included throughout.

Two options are available, sheet music and a MIDI file.

Gospel Corner - Say 'Amen' Somebody
The Hangout Place for Gospel Classics
| |
You don't have to be from the Deep South to love Gospel piano, nor do you need to belong to any particular religion. All you have to have is a love for wonderful old-time, swinging, uplifting piano-playing.
Leon Russell, Billy Preston, Richard Tee and Ray Charles, some of the greatest keyboard players ever, loved the style and infused their own performances with Gospel licks and rhythms.
Inspired by the wonderful playing of the portly Associate Pastor/Musical Director of my childhood's Baptist Church deep in the piney woods of Mississippi, in recent years I've transcribed and/or arranged a few Gospel classics.
This little corner of my newsletter is where I'll keep you informed of my latest efforts to share that old-time Gospel sound.
Here are my Gospel transcriptions and/or arrangements, plus some exercises:

MIDI Corner - Transcriptions Turned into MIDI Files
Helpful for Those that Don't Read Sheet Music Well
| |
Most of my transcriptions have heretofore been available only as sheet music in PDF's. That is gradually changing - some are now also available as MIDI files, which can be especially helpful for those who would prefer to listen to them than to read the sheet-music notation.
This section of my newsletter is where I'll keep you informed of which transcriptions and exercises are available as MIDI files.
BTW, if you'd like my sheet music in a MIDI file, just let me know which one(s).

I've had the good fortune to have worked with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, and if you're serious about learning, I'll be happy to help you, too.
By means of Skype lessons (or in-person if you're in L.A.), I can coach you and help you to improve your technique, your rhythm, your ability to improvise, your knowledge of music theory, your sight-reading, and to develop relative pitch.
I've had the good fortune to have toured the world playing keyboards and arranging/conducting for these Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Artists:
| |
- The Beach Boys
- Rod Stewart - All 'Unplugged' Concerts
- Ricky Nelson - Stone Canyon Band
And I've also won classical piano competitions performing Beethoven, Rubinstein and Saint-Saens' Piano Concerti. See me playing here. "Josie's Boogie" is quite the virtuoso dramatic minor-key showpiece; check out the ascending double-octave run at the ending... :)
Thanks to the internet, I can help you play piano better - rock or classical, by ear or by note.
Or if you live near the Hollywood Hills, I'll teach you in my home or yours.
If you'd like to improve, drop me a note at info@manymidi.com. Tell me three things:
1) Your musical background
2) Where you are currently, musically-speaking
3) Your musical goals
If you'd like to step back in time, watch me playing piano with Ricky Nelson on the Tonight Show - click here.
And here is a video of us playing three songs on The Midnight Special. And here we are on Tom Snyder's Tomorrow Show.
