GatorITE Student Chapter Wins District Traffic Bowl for the Sixth Consecutive Time

The GatorITE student chapter secured its sixth consecutive win during the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Florida-Puerto Rico (FL-PR) District Traffic Bowl competition held during the chapter's Student Leadership Summit (SLS) hosted the University of Florida this month. Creating Innovative Operational Strategies with the Help of the I-STREET™ Living Lab

The University of Florida, along with its Transportation Institute (UFTI), the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and the City of Gainesville (CoG), embarked on a journey to create the I-STREET™ Living Lab as an ongoing commitment to developing a transportation system in Florida that is safer, smarter, and efficient. I-STREET is an acronym for Implementing Solutions from Transportation Research and Evaluation of Emerging Technologies. Through the “Support for the I-STREET™ Testbed,” a project funded by FDOT, UFTI researchers were tasked with developing strategies to enhance transportation safety and mobility via a strategic action plan. UFTI researchers mapped out a multipronged approach for driving a strategy comprised of research development methods, industry outreach and engagement, workforce development and education, and public agency engagement. Utilizing Technology and Traffic Data to Help Keep Florida's I-4 Corridor Safe and Efficient

Interstate 4, or I-4, is a highway in Florida that begins in Tampa and ends in Daytona Beach. I-4 is notorious for its traffic jams as locals, tourists, and freight travel along this high-growth corridor. To find solutions to the traffic congestion issues plaguing I-4, a team of UFTI researchers are creating a framework to help manage traffic and keep people safe. [Read more]

Shaping the Future of Transportation Leaders through the 2024 GatorITE Student Leadership Summit

The UF Gator Institute of Transportation Engineers (GatorITE) Student Chapter organized and led a Student Leadership Summit (SLS), bringing together 69 students, 50 transportation professionals, and 22 speakers from across Florida. Florida Secretary of Transportation Jared W. Purdue, PE, gave the keynote address. The event was held February 9 – 12 at the recently inaugurated Malachowsky Hall on the UF campus. [Read more]

Associate Director of McTrans Receives Award for Volunteer Leadership from the Central Northeastern Florida Section of ITE

Fabio Sasahara, Ph.D., associate director at the McTrans Center, pictured third from left, was awarded the President’s Award from the Central Northeastern Florida Section of ITE (CNFLITE). This award was given in recognition of Dr. Sasahara's volunteering efforts as Technical Event Coordinator, where he is responsible for arranging speakers for technical presentations at the CNFLITE's monthly networking luncheons. Dr. Sasahara has been actively involved with this group since 2020, where he also advocates for student issues as the faculty advisor of the UF Gator ITE Student Chapter (GatorITE).
