Whatcom Family Farmers Call for Solutions
to Flooding, Water Management
Whatcom Family Farmers outlines proposed solutions and seeks support from the community.

"Farmers are calling for a comprehensive approach that pursues all possible fixes.... not only due to the devastation of the November floods, but also to dangerously low stream levels caused by drought just a few months before, and the harm that caused to salmon populations. Though seemingly opposites, both crises have the same cause. The Nooksack Basin does not have a water supply problem; the basin has a water management problem.” -- Rich Appel, President Whatcom Family Farmers

With ongoing recovery from November's devastating flooding disaster in Whatcom County, agricultural leaders continue pushing for better water storage solutions, sediment management and waterway improvements in place of a planned lawsuit by Washington State against water rights holders in the Nooksack drainage.
