WesternU Black History Month event focuses on tolerance, trauma and healing |
Phaizon R. Wood, EdD, MFT, a consultant, educator and psychotherapist specializing in trauma, presented “Opening the Window of Tolerance: Finding a balance between hope and despair” at Western University of Health Sciences’ Black History and Education Month event Feb. 26, 2024.
The event was organized by the WesternU Office of Humanism, Equity, and Anti-Racism (HEAR) in WesternU California’s Health Professions Center with livestreaming to WesternU Oregon. Dr. Wood’s presentation took inspiration from the WesternU motto “To Teach, To Heal, Together.”
“I like that a lot. I also think that it’s revolutionary in terms of what it takes to teach and to heal and to be together in doing that, both with your colleagues and with your friends and family,” he said. “Trying to take this mission on is not an easy thing.”

Interprofessional WesternU team presents at international conference | |
| | In an impressive showcase of interdisciplinary collaboration, a team from Western University of Health Sciences presented exciting research at the Ottawa conference, a leading global event in Melbourne, Australia. The study, titled "Impact of Transitioning to a Microlearning Online Format from Pre-Recorded Video Lectures," was spearheaded by an interprofessional team including Dr. Chaya Prasad from the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, Dr. Fanglong Dong from the College of Podiatric Medicine (pictured above giving his research findings at the conference), and Tracy Mendolia-Moore from CETL’s EdTech Innovations. This innovative research offers compelling evidence on the effectiveness of microlearning in medical education, marking a significant advancement in educational technologies post-COVID-19. The two-year comparative study with medical students revealed a strong preference for microlearning over traditional lecture formats. Key findings include higher organization, ease of finding topics, and improvements in student engagement, retention, and exam preparation.
The successful presentation at the Ottawa conference not only underscores WesternU's commitment to innovative educational strategies but also highlights the strength of its interprofessional collaboration. The findings from this study point towards a promising direction for enhancing learning outcomes in medical education through the use of microlearning techniques.
