WKU graduate named Rangel Fellow
WKU graduate Keightley Dudgeon of Crestwood was named a 2021 Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Graduate Fellow. She is one of 45 fellows selected nationwide and only the second WKU student to earn this honor.

The Rangel Graduate Fellowship supports extraordinary individuals who want to help formulate, represent, and implement U.S. foreign policy through a career in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. Dudgeon will receive up to $42,000 annually for a two-year master’s degree, two paid internships in the U.S. Congress and a U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad, and opportunities for mentoring and professional development.

Through a master’s degree in international relations, Dudgeon will study public policy with a focus on international development. “My hope is to effect bureaucratic change in refugee and immigration services, both domestically and abroad,” she said.

Dudgeon, a 2019 graduate in Arabic with a minor in Teaching English as a Second Language, has long been interested in the Middle East and North Africa region. As an undergraduate student, she earned a Critical Language Scholarship for intensive Arabic language study in Morocco, building on her proficiency gains from a study abroad program for intensive Arabic study in Jordan through WKU Global. She also participated in the Qatar Foundation International Universities Debate Championship.
African American Museum rebuilding
On December 11, Bowling Green’s African American Museum suffered damage from tornadoes that swept the state. Then on December 22, an electrical fire broke out at the museum. Firefighters quickly responded and brought many items to WKU's Service and Supply Building. Over the next several days, the recovery team implemented the museum’s disaster plan. As of this week, most recovered items are fully dried and are being temporarily housed at the Kentucky Museum. The team is working with WKU’s Department of Facilities Management as well as insurance liaisons and conservation specialists to determine the next steps.

CPE certifies its first cultural competency program at WKU
The Council on Postsecondary Education awarded its first cultural competency credential certification to WKU’s Inclusive Teaching Academy on Wednesday. The Inclusive Teaching Academy is a four-month professional development opportunity for all faculty ranks. “The fact that Western Kentucky University is the first university in the state to receive approval for its Cultural Competency Credential program continues to illustrate our ongoing commitment to educating faculty about creating an inclusive classroom environment,” said WKU Provost Robert “Bud” Fischer. “This program and similar programs related to diversity, equity and inclusion are part of the university’s ONE WKU campaign.”
Spotlight: Dr. Sungjin Im
“Human minds are already a fascinating topic for me. Why do people develop mental illness? How can clinical science contribute to ameliorating human suffering and promoting mental wellbeing? Answering these questions is closely aligned with my personal values as well as my research interests.” -- Dr. Sungjin Im, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology
