February 2022 Newsletter
Dear LCAC Comunidad

Does anyone else feel caught between the world as it was before the pandemic, and the world as it could be? Are you feeling the personal and professional need to evolve and grow?

Well, you are not alone. At the LCAC, we are experiencing a period of growth and transition. We are revisiting everything from our policies and procedures, and evaluating our programs, to rethinking how we organize, celebrate, and engage with you, our comunidad

In honor of Black History Month, I leave you with a question to ponder during these in-between spaces from hometown legend, and MacArthur Fellow, artist Jordan Casteel. She asks us to reflect about self-care and our careers, saying, “Is there such a thing as rest as things grow?” Casteel’s feature in The Cut magazine is a must read, check it out here

A Note from LCAC Board Member:

Reflecting on the growth and transitions in my life, I think about the professional & personal experiences that guide me. These skills and understandings contribute to my character & motivation to support my community, whether as a foster parent, or as a new board member.

Heading into 2022, I will leverage my skills to help create a sustainable financial model. As we enhance daily operations and strategic efforts, we can begin to activate the LCAC Cultural Campus.

A Note from LCAC Team Member:

We are so excited to announce the March 2nd launch of our new customer relationship management system, Blackbaud's Altru! Our team spent the past 6 months training and converting data.

Our goal is to offer a personalized and enriching experience to every person that engages with the LCAC; from merchandise at Hijos del Sol, online ticketing, to the programs and events that bring us all together in honor of Latino excellence.

Thank you for your patience, support and grace as we work through these transitions. I look forward to seeing you soon and building deeper connections on our journey ahead.

In Observance of Black History Month We Reflect on Latino and Black Solidarity in Denver
Did you know that Denver’s Public Art Program was established in 1988 as an Executive Order under Mayor Federico Peña? The order was enacted into Ordinance by Denver City Council in 1991 under the leadership of Mayor Wellington E. Webb, and First Lady of Denver, Wilma J. Webb, which directs that 1% of any capital improvement project over $1 million undertaken by the City, be set aside for the inclusion of art.

This led to Denver Arts & Venues (A&V), which administers the curation of Denver’s Public Art Collection which is inspiring, refreshing, bold, and all around us! Over $40 million has been invested in public art for Denver residents by Denver residents, making A&V one of the finest examples of intercultural and innovative leadership.

"Malintzin: Unraveled and Rewoven"
The Conquest of Mexico, Tapestry, Leslie Tillet
Estamos Encantados for our Community Arts Program Leader Lilian Lara's first curatorial project opening on March 31, 2022, at Next Stage Gallery, located in the Denver's Performing Arts Complex. This exhibition teases out the different threads of what is known about Malintzin/Malinche by taking you on a journey through a jungle created out of textiles.

Lilian is teaming up with designer Norberto Mojardin to recontextualize imagery associated with survival, resilience, and reverence of this undeniable paragon. Students from the UCD College of Arts and Media created an app that includes an interactive digitized viewing of The Conquest of Mexico Tapestry, offering a modern interpretation of Cortez's 36-month long campaign between 1519 and 1521. This 100-foot long depiction shows Malintzin's vital role during this historical epoch.

Malintzin: Unraveled and Rewoven will show through May 31, 2022 and is free to the public.
