CHRONICLES: Happy New Year from Employ Milwaukee!

Happy New Year! I sincerely hope you celebrated the start of 2023 safely and are ready to tackle the new year ahead of us. I am inspired by what Employ Milwaukee was able to achieve in 2022 and am taking this inspiration into 2023 as we continue to adapt and innovate towards building a safe and prosperous Milwaukee for all community members to live, work, and thrive.

Many workforce trends we saw in 2022 will continue to be relevant throughout 2023. Unfortunately, employers will continue to struggle finding and keeping workers: unemployment will remain low and voluntary turnover is expected to reach 35% in 2023. Employ Milwaukee is here to help employers face these challenges in a variety of ways: pre-screening, hosting hiring events, funding on-the-job training for new employees, and upskilling incumbent workers to strengthen your current workforce.

If you’ve made a resolution to invest in yourself by upskilling or starting a new career, this is your year! Be sure to visit our website at employmilwaukee.org to tap into our various training programs offered across industries, many of which provide income during training, incentives as you complete milestones, and supportive services to help you succeed such as childcare or transportation.

I cannot wait to see what 2023 holds. While the future of this year remains uncertain, I can say with 100% certainty that our dedicated team at Employ Milwaukee is excited to help you meet your 2023 goals. Please don’t hesitate to reach out about how we can work together to make 2023 a happy and successful year.

Sincerely,

2022 REPORT: HEALTHCARE IN WISCONSIN

2022 was another difficult year for the healthcare industry in Wisconsin. An aging workforce and increases in employee departures continued to create struggles for hiring outlooks in healthcare. While all industries are facing workforce challenges, healthcare faces an additional, unique challenge: demand is largely determined by demographics. Wisconsin's healthcare industry will need to adapt to the dual issues of a rapidly aging population and a shrinking workforce.

The good news is there is a continued interest in healthcare careers: "The American Association

of Colleges of Nursing reports that nursing enrollments increased in 2020 and 2021. These enrollments will keep growth rates of the RN profession on pace with the national 29% increase from 2008 to 2018 in actively licensed nurses living in the United States, according to the latest Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses." (Wisconsin Healthcare Association’s 2022 Wisconsin Health Care Workforce Report).

WHA has six recommendations for policymakers, educators, employers, and healthcare professional to meet the growing demand with a shrinking workforce:

  1. Break down barriers to entering and remaining in the health care workforce, including legal, regulatory and payer barriers, burden and burnout.
  2. Identify practice, policy and payment reforms to advance team-based care and allow health care professionals and teams to reach their full potential.
  3. Truly leverage technology to both improve care and reduce workforce demands.
  4. Create and make clear educational and occupational pathways to attract new entrants to frontline technical and clinical positions in the health care workforce.
  5. Define innovative and sustainable strategies to meet the evolving workforce expectations to recruit and retain the health care workforce necessary to meet rising demand.
  6. Reshape the continuum of care, and the public health and emergency preparedness infrastructure to mitigate over-reliance on hospitals, health systems and the health care workforce to meet post-acute and public health needs.

SUCCESS STORY

EARN & LEARN POSITIVELY IMPACTS YOUTH CAREER OUTLOOK

The Center for Healthcare Careers of Southeast Wisconsin’s Medical Assistant Pathway to Employment Training (MAAPET) project hosted two Earn and Learn youth during the summer of 2022. The extra assistance from the youth accelerated medical assistant training to trainees from four hospital systems throughout Southeast Wisconsin. In addition to providing much needed support to MAAPET instructors and trainees, the Earn and Learn participants were exposed to CHC's Medical Assistant training program and to healthcare careers.

Tommie Milan, one of CHC's Earn and Learn participants, enjoyed the exposure to the healthcare sector. “The program has impacted me by teaching me skills that I can use in future jobs,” explained Tommie. “I learned to do inventory, label, and develop a resume. My supervisors even taught me how to use a stethoscope!”

Tommie's enthusiasm was shared by those he worked with: “Tommie was an awesome worker,” remarked his supervisor, Yvette Willis. “He was exceptionally dependable and never missed a day of work.”

MAAPET instructors provided mentoring and support to Tommie and their other Earn and Learn participant to assist them in moving to the next step in their healthcare careers, even after conclusion of the Earn and Learn Program. After enjoying his time working with MAAPET, Tommie is hoping to enter the field of healthcare and become a pharmacy technician. His worksite supervisors are providing mentoring to him, assisted him in developing his resume, and worked with him in strengthening his job interviewing skills. They have also connected him with several area healthcare systems that offer pharmacy technician training to assist Tommie in achieving his immediate career goal.
