A Note from the AMA Young Physicians Section Chair
Laura Faye Gephart, MD, MBA

Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler,
the first black woman in the United States to receive an MD degree.
| |
February presents an annual opportunity to celebrate the achievements of African Americans during Black History Month, then March celebrates the achievements of women.
For a quick read, check out AAMC summaries on 10 African American medical pioneers, the first of which is Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD, the first black woman in the United States to receive an MD degree.
Young physicians, students and trainees are exponentially more diverse than in prior decades, yet people of color and especially Black men remain grossly underrepresented in medicine—less than three percent of physicians. In the past, organized medicine was part of the problem. Finally, in 2008, Ronald Davis, MD, then the AMA immediate past president, apologized at the National Medical Association’s annual meeting for the AMA’s role excluding African Americans from the AMA and some state and local medical societies.
