Engineering Design in Gooding

Kindergarten through 5th-grade students in Gooding's 21CCLC school used the scientific method and the engineering design process to learn why objects sink or float, and to build their own boats.

We started off the day together by making predictions and testing objects in tubs of water. Using those observations, we examined what is and is not a boat. For example, we decided boats float but that doesn't necessarily mean everything that floats is a boat!

We put our ideas to the test, designing and building a boat that would float while carrying small, plastic animals. Many students were eager to improve on their designs at home.

Do you know a budding engineer who is interested in design? Watch the "Whatever Floats Your Boat" episode from The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That. Access episode and activities on PBS LearningMedia. —Trisha Mick, Community Education Specialist
