Announcement from our State 4-H Council Representative- Bridget Johnson


We are excited to announce the State 4-H Council's newest service initiative, Do All the Good You Can. Sign up with the link below to receive bi-monthly service challenges to give back to your community! Your club or group will log hours or things donated. The counties with the most hours by Youth Conference in June will receive an award. We look forward to hearing about all of the good you are able to do this year!

MARSHALL CO. BEEF BITS

All Market beef must be entered into 4hOnline by February 1st. Purebred market animals must have their breed selected and tattoo information entered at this time. After February 1st, our staff is not able to create new animals, only update already existing information.

COUNTY EVENTS

Are you interested in doing a communications project this year? On January 28th @ 10 am, we will be hosting a communications workshop to help youth navigate how communications projects work, what judges are looking for in the projects, and work on our presentation skills. If you are interested, please sign-up below by January 21st.

If you are interested in learning more about photography, practicing your skills, and learning about what the judges are looking for at the fair, consider joining us at Grimes Farms on Feb. 11th at 10 am for a photography retreat.


Weather permitting, we will go outside to shoot photos. Please dress accordingly, because we know that February weather can be unpredictable.


If you have a camera, please bring that with you. We will have a few extras with us, but not enough for everyone. Phones are acceptable.

If you have a market sheep or meat goat, please be sure to bring your animal to weigh-in on April 30th. If you need to weigh-in at a different county, please make sure you contact our office prior to going, so that we can coordinate with the other county. 641-752-1551 or egeemley@iastate.edu


Both market and breeding sheep must be weighed in, have retinal images, and an official 4-H tag in order to be shown at the Iowa State Fair. Sexually intact sheep must have a scrapies tag.


All meat goats, both market and breeding, must have retinal images in order to be shown at the Iowa State Fair, and be tagged with an official 4-H tag or tattooed. Sexually intact goats must have a scrapies tag.

The 2023 Communications and Clothing Event will take place on June 23rd, 2023 from 10 am-3 pm at the Marshalltown Public Library. This is where the following exhibits will be judged and evaluated.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Bayer Future Ag Leader Scholarships:

$1,500 scholarship for high school seniors through colleges juniors pursuing any ag-related field of study at a trade school, community college or four-year college/university. The website will lead you to an FFA scholarship page, however, students do NOT have to be in FFA to apply or receive the scholarship. Due January 12th, 2023

Iowa Farm Bureau Scholarships:

IFBF will award 27 graduating high school seniors from Iowa (three from each of IFBF’s nine districts) a $2,500 scholarship, renewable for four years (up to $10,000 per recipient); college and graduate students are not eligible to apply.

Each of IFBF’s 100 county Farm Bureaus will select one application from their county to be considered for IFBF’s state scholarship. To qualify for the IFBF scholarship renewal, the recipient must continue to meet the scholarship requirements annually. Due on February 3rd, 2023.

All of the scholarships listed below are 4-H scholarships that require residence in Marshall County, however, Iowa 4-H has many more scholarships that do not require residence in a specific county. If you click on the link below, you can log in, and it will help filter you to the scholarships that you qualify for.

General 4-H Scholarship Link

Verle and Ellen Hunt Memorial 4-H Scholarship:

This is a $1,000 scholarship set up by the estate of Verle and Ellen Hunt for Marshall County 4-Hers, who are pursuing any undergraduate field of study at Iowa State University the next academic year. Due on March 1st, 2023.

Iowa Bankers Association- Central Region:

$500 scholarship for 4-Hers who live in Boone, Dallas, Greene, Hamilton, Hardin, Jasper, Madison, Marshall, Polk, Poweshiek, Story, Tama, Warren, and Webster counties, that plan to attend a 2 or 4-year public or private college/university in the state of Iowa. Due on March 1st, 2023.

Robert and Harriet Smith Family Scholarship:

$500 scholarship for 4-Hers who live in Jasper, Marshall, Story, or Johnson Counties, who will be a freshman at Iowa State University the next academic year, and who is pursuing a degree in an agriculture or family consumer sciences-related field. Applicant must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Due March 1st, 2023.

Theisen's Home Farm Auto 4-H Scholarship:

$125 scholarship for 4-Hers residing in a county that has a Theisen's store, and will be attending a community college or 4-year college/university in the state of Iowa. Applicant must be a college freshman in the semester that the scholarship is awarded. Due March 1st, 2023.

STATE 4-H NEWS & EVENTS

This is an inclusive teen event held in Washington, D.C., for four days of inspiring and engaging panels, respected speakers, workshop sessions, entertainment, and creating amazing connections. The conference is March 9-12. Iowa 4-H will select up to 8 youth representatives to participate in the Agri-Science Track at the conference. Youth selected to participate by Iowa 4-H through this application will have airfare and registration provided by support from Google.

Iowa 4-H STEM in Motion

June 6-10, 2023 | New York City to Boston


STEM in Motion is a program geared towards 9-12 grade students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. This opportunity incorporates travel with educational opportunities to interact in a real-world setting and career-oriented pathways.


Students will also get the opportunity to gain 1-college credit in science for going on the trip and completing coursework upon return. College credit is offered through George Mason University.

STEM in Motion Information

Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) is a 4-H leadership and civic engagement program for high school youth (completed grades 9-12 at the time of the trip). Each summer teens gather in Washington DC to learn what it means to be a strong leader in their community, country, and world.
