Coaching Can Build Independence
As we move past this year's 4th of July holiday, it is worthwhile to reflect on how coaching can help students discover their authentic selves and become independent in two pivotal ways:
- More commonly, coaches ask questions that help students build autonomy in ideas and action, growing in their ability to act and think independently.
- Equally as important, coaches can challenge students to identify who they are independent of the expectations and assumptions of others.
Often, when students perceive areas of failure or low ability in themselves, what they are seeing is the gap between an expectation -- from family, society, or systems -- and where they presently stand. Ask questions that challenge them to shift their perspectives:
- What do you expect of yourself? How does that compare with what your family/institution/society expects of you?
- What goal feels empowering and motivating to you? How can that goal fit into what is expected of you as a student at this institution?
- How can you look at yourself and your school's expectations and envision a smoother road ahead rather than a nearly-impossible rock climbing expedition?
A powerful question in a coaching moment can turn any day into Independence Day.
