This past month, the LumenSparQ team and over forty community volunteers fanned out on the playgrounds at 156th Street Elementary School to paint three unique sensory regulation courses. Often called sensory pathways, these courses are designed for students to release stress, refocus, meditate and reflect.
Students will find tranquil walking paths, Zones of Regulation, and stomping logs. There's a space for yoga poses and visual prompts to pause, breathe, and stretch. With mental health a top priority in schools today, these courses provide an avenue for students to manage their emotions, release tension, and return to the classroom with a learning mindset.
Phase two of the project will involve the creation of short instructional videos to train everyone in the proper use of these courses.
