Trust.
As Pastor Steve shared with us this past Sunday, there will always be things that happen in life that “we did not ask for." Whether the consequences of our own bad choices, the actions of others, or simply because of the brokenness of this world, our best laid plans will often fail or need to be redirected.
 
Do Better, Try Harder?
 
So, when things do not go our way, how are we to respond? What does faithfulness look like when life falls apart on us? For many Christians, the first response is often to attempt to regain a sense of control by increasing our devotion to God. We think, “if I show God how much I love Him, He will then bless me in return”. After all, when Paul and Silas were imprisoned, and then worshipped God (even while in chains), God miraculously rescued them! And so, when our plans fall apart, we often think that if we would only worship God more, and pray more, and go to church more often, and give a little more, then God will respond by fulfilling our desires. 
 
Having faith is about learning to trust.
 
But genuine faith is not about seeking to gain control. Genuine faith is about trust. Trusting that God is good. Trusting that God is love. Trusting that God is there for us and has our very best interests in mind. And having this trust is what then allows us to release control.
 
Letting go and holding on.
 
So, how do we trust God when our own choices or the actions of others have derailed our hopes and dreams? How do we trust God when life comes crashing down around us for no other reason than this world is not as it should be? Real trust begins with us looking at Jesus, and at what God has done for us through Jesus. If God loved us so much that He would take on our human flesh and give His life for us on the Cross, is there anything that He wouldn’t do for us? While the present is not always what we had hoped it would be, looking at what God has done for us in the past begins to give us hope for the future.
 
So, as we learn to trust in the goodness of God, may we let go of our own plans, and hold on to the infinite love of God.
 
May we walk in the image of God this week!

No Regrets Men's Conference - Saturday, February 5th
On Saturday, February 5th, at Faith Evangelical Free Church, we will be teaming up with Elmbrook Church to bring a live video feed to the No Regrets Men's Conference, the country’s premier Christian men’s conference. The event runs from 8:30am to 1:00pm. Doors open at 7:15am for breakfast and fellowship.

Scripture of the Week
Isaiah 41:13 (NIV) -- For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, “Do not fear; I will help you.”

Flexibility... following God's plan rather than the one we had in mind. When our plans change... keep trusting and following Jesus in that moment.

That's what we discussed on Sunday, and that's actually what we practiced. God completely changed my plan for what to teach on Sunday. We turned one message into 2, possibly 3... and just focused on that one key truth.

We ended in prayer & worship... just like Paul & Silas did inside the Philippians jail. And although there was no earthquake... God certainly "showed up" and gave a lot of people encouragement and wisdom.

This week, we continue in this passage... with our theme being "Jesus knows best!"
