Important Winter News From and About The Pines
Greetings!
Happy New Year!

A lot has been happening in the Pines since my last newsletter. Since sharing is caring, I have lots to share!
Update on "Informing the Future of Fire Island Pines: Long-term Community Planning"

I am delighted to report that we have made considerable progress gathering ideas and feedback from the community to inform our long-term community-wide planning. In November, 10 focus groups were conducted with approximately 50 community members reflecting a diverse set of voices and opinions, all with deep connections to the Pines.

Based on the focus group learnings, we created a community-wide survey that was distributed via newsletter. I am inspired that more than 600 members of the Pines community took the time and made the commitment to complete the survey. This is perhaps the most robust and thorough feedback we have ever received from the community addressing goals, aspirations, opportunities and challenges that we may face over the coming five to ten years.

Our professional consultant, Josh Mintz, will be leading the FIPPOA board of directors through a dedicated discussion of the survey results, after which the board will determine what areas of focus are most important and within FIPPOA’s scope of control and influence and therefore addressable.

I will provide a full report to the community by newsletter prior to and in-person at the Spring Membership Meeting when we return to the Pines this spring.
Photo Request for New Website

FIPPOA is updating our website so that it can be a useful one-stop resource for all Pines community members. We would like to source photos from you, our community, that reflect all aspects of The Pines and its residents, visitors, businesses, and environment. Here are a few examples of the photos we are looking for:

  • Images of friends and family having fun on the beach, boardwalk, harbor, on a boat, or at a house (deck, roof, by the pool, etc).
  • Images of friends and family at an event in the Pines such as the Pines Party or the Invasion.
  • Images of the beach, dunes, harbor, marina.
  • Images from a FIPPOA event/function, particularly group photos.
  • Images of the mobility cart in action.
  • Images of Whyte Hall.
  • Nature images taken in the Pines, for example sunrise, sunset, the ocean, the bay, pine trees, boardwalks.

Please email your photos to Contact@fippoa.org no later than February 1st. We will do our best to include as many as we can, but please understand that we won’t be able to showcase every photo. We are seeking high resolution, and the quality will factor into selection. We will credit all photos when we launch our new website. Thank you for contributing to this effort and we look forward to sharing the new website with you soon!

Seashore Defense Fund Installs New Dune Fencing

In December, for the first time, two rows of “serpentine” sand fencing were added to the entire length of the Pines to help strengthen the dune. The SDF spearheaded the project with augmented funding from the Town of Brookhaven’s Erosion Control District, which property owners fund each year as a component of real estate taxes. We know sand fencing works, and more is planned in 2022. I am grateful to SDF Chair, Russell Saray, and our Community Manager, Karen McCutcheon, for overseeing this effort together with the installation expertise of Todd Erickson from Cherry Grove. The Pines Foundation’s SDF is committed to prepare, protect and preserve our most precious resource – our dune.
PSEGLI Tree Trimming

During November, crews from PSEGLI were in the community trimming trees that pose a threat to electrical wires. This important safety precaution had not been undertaken in many years. With FIPPOA’s cooperation, the work was completed efficiently and successfully, all of which is vital to protecting our electrical and new FIOS internet infrastructure.
House Numbers Painted on Boardwalks

In the late Fall, work began on painting house numbers on the boardwalks in front of each house. The Fire Island Pines Fire Department requested that FIPPOA undertake this community-wide effort to facilitate locating the proper site when responding to an emergency. Once the weather warms, the painting will finish so that we may all return with the added safety precaution in place.
Winter Ferry Email Group

Last year an email group was established for those who spend time in the Pines during the winter to keep each other updated on "specials" that might be running or to gauge interest in organizing a “special". If you travel to/from the Pines during the Winter and are interested in joining this email group, you may do so here - groups.google.com/g/pines-winter-ferry.

I will not be posting changes to the Winter Sayville Ferry Service schedule because most recipients are not in the community during the off-season. Due to unpredictable winter weather including harbor icing, please remember to check the Sayville ferry website for any possible cancellations or changes to the posted schedule before you plan to travel.
As you can see, many people have been hard at work during the off-season months. I appreciate all our staff, volunteers, board members, community leaders, and all of you who have taken the time to participate in FIPPOA’s collective efforts to make the Pines the incredible place that it is, not only now in the present but also as we look to the future.

Stay warm, safe and healthy,

Henry
