Sunapee Happenings
Just in time for Fourth of July… Summer has arrived! After two pandemic summers, the prospect of a ‘normal’ summer is very exciting. We’re very much looking forward to the return of normalcy with family and friends joining us for a packed calendar of summer events. Music at The Livery and on the town bandstands, the return of theater at the Barn Playhouse, golf and tennis, sailing on Sunapee’s blue waters, or diving in for a swim. Camp days for the kids. Arts & Crafts Fairs, a summer of dining al fresco, shopping and gathering without masks… however as we've learned by now, waves of the virus are also part of the norm, prompting some of us to take extra precautions. The Lake Sunapee region is a highly sought after destination. Let’s also welcome the visitors to our livable, lovable mountain and lakes sanctuary.
Cue the (Patriotic) Music
Rhapsody in Blue
A beautiful rendition of “Rhapsody in Blue” by the iconic American composer, George Gershwin, to accompany
all the 'pomp & circumstance' of the holiday.

Music Series at The Livery
Friday night at 7. The big green doors of The Livery will swing open for the first concert of the season by the Decatur Creek trio.

Next Week
Cecil Abels and everybody’s favorite, New England Bluegrass Band will be at The Livery! You loved them at Project Sunapee’s 2021 Gala “Bluegrass, Boots & Bling” last summer.  Do not miss this chance to don your best boots and join us on the dance floor, one more time!

A new 4th of July tradition:
A Patriotic "Sing-a-long” at the Ben Mere Bandstand prior to the FIREWORKS! The twinkling fire lights on that hillside are compliments of the children of Sunapee who made hundreds of paper lanterns for the celebrations!

Ben Mere Bandstand
Next Wednesday, July 6th on the Ben Mere Bandstand:  Back Bay Transit Band performs an eclectic musical offering that blends Rock, Funk and Jazz favorites.
Calendar
The coming week’s calendar is full of typical summer activities.

Fourth of July
Let the Fourth of July Celebrations begin in Sunapee Harbor!
Friday, July 1st at 6pm The Great Watermelon Race! Take one watermelon, add wheels and decorate. Then get ready to roll down Maple Street to River Road. May the best melon win.
Shop early Saturday morning at the Sunapee Farmers Market for everything on your weekend cookout list.
Saturday, July 2nd at noon, be ready to cheer as the Sunapee Recreation Dept.’s  “Rec, White & Blue” parade steps off from Saint Joachim's on their route up Central St., onto Main St. and down to the Harbor where once again the vintage Buffalo Springfield Steam Roller deftly makes the turn onto River Road and back down the hill.
After the parade, head over to the Bandstand. You can enter or watch Sunapee’s first ever "Hot Dog Eating Contest!" How many can they eat? Who will set the record and win the prizes?
Enjoy an afternoon of tunes by “Friday Night Therapy” performing on Ben Mere Bandstand from 2 to 5 pm.
The music continues as the Riverway presents “The Fern Family Band” under the tent on the Flanders Stage, from 5 to 7.
As the sun sets and people gather ‘round the Ben Mere hillside to view the night's fireworks, a new 4th of July tradition is born. The Livery presents a "Patriotic Sing-a-long” and the sparkle of twinkling lanterns crafted by the children of our community!
At dusk, the always Spectacular Fireworks explosions will light the skies above Sunapee Harbor... to the ‘oohs and ‘aahs’ of spectators!
Then on Sunday night, July 3rd, the skies will light up once again as the Lake Sunapee Yacht Club sets off their encore Fireworks Extravaganza over the lake!
Monday, actually the 4th of July on the calendar, culminates with family and friends gathering for cook outs and games and perhaps a long nap before the work week begins.
Sunapee Business Feature
The “Get to Know Your Sunapee Businesses” feature is on holiday and will resume next week.
Sunapee Trivia
Our readers are familiar with The Livery! Over 70% selected 'The Livery' as the location for this sign. Betty was the name of a horse that was at The Livery. This was her name tag.
Yup - that is a camel in Sunapee Harbor. Is the above photo real?
Yes
No
Let us remember why we have celebrated this day since 1776. It stands to recognize our independence as a nation, and this year, at this time, we wish the same for others, especially for Ukraine in this time of peril as they struggle for their independence.
Wednesday’s email “SUNAPEE HAPPENINGS
