Please mark your calendars for Storytellers: JMC Visit Day on April 1. This will be a great opportunity to showcase our school to high school seniors making their final college choice. Associate Professor Jerry Crawford is one of two candidates for AEJMC’s vice president on the 2022 election slate. The winner will be installed as the 2024-25 president at the 2024 AEJMC Conference. Voting is open for all AEJMC members and will be held March 7-April 8. Ballots will be electronically sent to all eligible AEJMC members with deliverable email addresses – check your emails, including spam boxes, for voting information by March 7. Please consider voting for Crawford as part of a very exciting slate of elections for various other AEJMC offices. Crawford most recently served as the PF&R Standing Committee chair for AEJMC.
Assistant Professor Rebekka Schlichting has been selected by Firelight Media, Center for Asian American Media, and PBS to direct a digital short film for their new collection HOMEGROWN: Future Visions, centering on filmmakers of color from the American Midwest and on narratives that illuminate the living histories, cultures and future visions of the region.
The JOUR611: Sales Strategies class welcomed the following guests speakers recently:
▮ John Sommese is senior vice president of CoxReps in New York. In his 30 years of leading sales teams, Sommese has delivered innovative solutions for his client groups, cultivated lasting client relationships, developed his team, and achieved successful sales results. He discussed networking, the importance of developing and building lasting relationships and the steps to make that happen.
▮ Lisa McLendon, J-School Multimedia Journalism concentration chair and Bremner Editing Center coordinator, discussed the importance of good grammar and writing skills used in business communication, especially emails. She offered tips on writing a good email.
The Tim Bengtson Mentor Award nominations are due next week. The award is given to a faculty member who goes above and beyond the classroom by lending a helping hand to inspire students to reach their full potential. The winner receives a $5,000 award, their name on a plaque and a memento. Deadline is today. Learn more here.

Professor Hyunjin Seo, doctoral student Darcey Altschwager and Ellie Booton (j’21) are co-authors of a research paper, “‘I don’t just take whatever they hand to me’: How women recently released from incarceration access internet health information,” which has been published in Women & Criminal Justice. They collaborated with researchers at the KU Medical Center and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences for this journal article.
Associate Professor Hong Vu was invited to present his research at San Diego State University on March 1. Vu joined a panel with scholars from Washington State University, University of Alabama, and University of Utah to discuss issues related to misinformation, mistrust in the media, and how to help users navigate the current information environment.
Lisa McLendon, Bremner Editing Center coordinator, gave a presentation Monday on writing clearly and concisely to a group of faculty and graduate students in the Medical Chemistry program in the School of Pharmacy. She was also the featured guest Wednesday on #ACESchat, the twice-monthly Twitter chat of ACES: The Society for Editing, with the topic of “Growing Your Grammar Skills.”
Doctoral candidate Pan “Jackie” Liu has been selected as the recipient of the Doctoral Student Research Fund (DSRF) by KU Graduate Studies. This $1,500 grant will help him on instrument development and data collection for his dissertation related to cross-cultural message design and information tailoring. Liu wishes to express his gratitude toward his dissertation chair Dr. Mugur Geana for the generous help and support in applying for the grant.

The KC Ad Club’s 2022-23 Foundation Scholarship deadline has been extended to March 11. The scholarship has been awarded for over 30 years and helps students set themselves apart from their peers and get involved in the thriving Kansas City advertising community. Learn more and apply.
The Elizabeth Miller Watkins Memorial Scholarship is an annual, renewable award for female identifying students of all disciplines admitted or attending the University of Kansas. A minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrated financial need is required. Special consideration is given to first-generation students and current or incoming residents of Watkins and Miller Halls. Awards are $4,000 annually for a maximum award amount of $16,000 per student. Deadline is March 15. Learn more and apply.
Fulbright Germany is offering its Berlin Capital Program for early-career American journalists and journalism students in September 2022. The program offers an opportunity to delve into transatlantic issues, gain valuable cultural insights, expand professional networks, and develop skills for better “translating” the news of Europe to a U.S. audience. Full scholarships are available. Deadline is March 21.
The Peter Agris Memorial Scholarship is for Greek-Americans pursuing careers in journalism and communications. Criteria for the $5,000 non-renewable scholarships include:
- Being of Greek-American decent and a U.S. citizen
- Current full-time enrollment as a journalism or communications major at the graduate or undergraduate level at an accredited college or university in the United States
- Active participation in school, community, or church organizations
- A minimum of a 3.0 GPA and demonstrated financial need
The Fred Young Hearst Television Producing Fellowship is a 12-week, paid fellowship program at a Hearst Television station. Applicants must be completing their senior year of college or graduate school and be graduating in the summer of 2022 (May-August). They must have demonstrated an interest in and ability to produce news, either for television, radio or online, excellent writing skills, a demonstrated ability to produce a newscast, and a good base of editorial judgment are important. Applicants must have a strong academic record and two recommendations from faculty or internship supervisors. They must be willing to spend 12 weeks post-graduation at a Hearst Television station of the company’s choosing and be willing to relocate to an appointed employing Hearst station after finishing the program. Get free food and compete for prizes at Wall Street Wednesdays |
The University Daily Kansan is partnering with The Wall Street Journal, the School of Business and Flip'd for Wall Street Wednesdays, a series of events designed to enhance student engagement with The Wall Street Journal. Each event begins at 12:20 p.m. with a quiz on the main ideas encapsulated in articles and stories reported in The Wall Street Journal the previous week. This is followed by a short discussion led by a faculty expert on a recent story from the newspaper. The event concludes by 12:50 p.m. with prizes for the top three scorers on the quiz and a light snack. The next event is March 9. Learn more and register here.

Seventy-six KU students and 19 companies participated in the J-School Career Fair on March 3 at Stauffer-Flint Hall. The most popular majors of the student attendees were strategic communications with 39 and multimedia journalism with 22. Other majors represented were marketing, pre-nursing, political science, environmental studies, engineering, communications, atmospheric sciences and sport management. The Class of 2022 had the biggest turnout with 33, followed by the Class of 2023 with 22.
A recruitment coordinator position is currently open in the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications. The recruiter would share information with prospective students about our exciting programs in strategic communications,multimedia journalism and media arts and production. Learn more and apply here.
