November Zone 10 Update
As we wrap up a busy fall with horses and riders showing throughout our zone and back east as well, we’re thrilled to see Zone 10 riders and horses succeeding in show rings from coast to coast.

We were proud to host riders from across the country at the 2021 Marshall & Sterling Insurance/USHJA National Championships and USHJA Affiliate Championships in Las Vegas this month. Zone 10 members had excellent results, with highlights including Nick Haness taking first and second place in the $25,000 USHJA Professional National Hunter Derby while Skylar Wireman captured the $25,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby - Junior/Amateur and the $10,000 1.25m Junior Jumper Grand Prix. Glenda Monkarsh took both the Champion and Reserve tricolors in the USHJA Adult Amateur Hunter 36-50 Championship, and Kylee Arbuckle rode to the USHJA Green Hunter 3'3" Championship and the USHJA Green Hunter 3'6" Championship. Congratulations to all our competitors and their support staff.

We’d also like to extend congratulations to our members who competed at equitation finals and indoors on the East Coast, including Avery Glynn, who rode to tenth place in the 2021 ASPCA Maclay National Championship. Zone 10 riders had fantastic results in all of the major equitation finals in the east.

Our Zone 10 riders made us proud at The Capital Challenge, as Augusta Iwasaki on Commentary sealed the Grand Junior Hunter Championship, and Lauren Padilla won the Grand Pony Hunter Championship with So Enchanted.

Zone 9 and 10 went head-to-head at the Markel/USHJA Zone Jumper Team Championships and Markel/USHJA Platinum Jumper Championships at the Desert International Horse Park, with Zone 10 teams and riders taking top honors in nearly every division.

At the 2021 Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Fund/USHJA Emerging Athletes Program National Training Session, Zone 10 member and stable manager Kathryn Perkins won gold in the modified Nations’ Cup competition as part of Team Kraut. Bravo, Kathryn.

This month, we’ll introduce you to junior rider Zoie Brogdon of Los Angeles, CA, who has had a fantastic year in the jumper ring across Zone 10.

Wishing you a fun and safe holiday season!

Zone 10 Member Highlight: Zoie Brogdon
Sixteen-year-old Zoie Brogdon has had a memorable year with her mount Emilon. The pair captured the individual gold medal in the 1.10/1.15m USHJA Children's Zone Jumper Championships, sealed the win in the Ghostbusters Grand Prix at the West Palms Events LA Halloween Spooktacular, and rode to reserve champion in the 1.10m Children’s Jumper section at USHJA National Championships.

Brogdon began riding at a summer camp, where an instructor noted her passion for horses and suggested she pursue riding. Brogdon’s mother enrolled her in the Compton Junior Equestrians, a program which developed Brogdon’s riding skills, horsemanship, and introduced her to showing.

Compton Junior Equestrians is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides after-school programs and summer camps to children in Compton and the greater Los Angeles area, focusing on horsemanship and riding, academic enrichment and mentoring, and agricultural skills. Today, Brogdon trains with Victoria Faerber of Riders United, which is affiliated with Compton Junior Equestrians, and Zoie receives additional show coaching from Georges Bittar.

A three-time recipient of the Michael Nyuis Grant from West Palms Events, Brogdon credits the scholarship with many of her recent opportunities. “It has been so beneficial for my riding career,” she said, noting that the grant has allowed her to horse show despite her busy schedule and academic demands. “I would not be jumping this high or have the same feel for my horse without the grant and West Palms.”

Brodgon is heading into her final year as a junior and is looking forward to continuing her riding career in college. Best of luck to Brogdon and all of our Zone 10 members in 2022!
