Community, Visibility, and Revenue:
Defining the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce
|
As a long-time Chamber of Commerce industry professional, I have been asked numerous times over the years what exactly the Chamber does. We are often associated with local government, with many believing we are part of city government. We get phone calls asking about getting a business license, zoning requirements for specific areas, and more. And while we know some of this information, we would be doing a disservice to those asking questions if we didn’t direct them to the best source for that information, which is the City of Pleasanton.
To be clear, we are not part of city government. By definition, a Chamber of Commerce is a private, membership-based, 501c(6) non-profit organization that works to improve its community by supporting local businesses. We differ in purpose from the better-known 501c(3) non-profits in that the c3’s basic function is charity, while c6’s are mostly business or membership non-profits. Both are independent and unaffiliated with local government, although we often work in partnership with the city to achieve goals that we all prioritize.
While that takes care of our legal definition, the question remains: What does a Chamber do? Here is my answer:
“We are the community that offers you visibility and resources to help you be successful and grow revenue.”

"Resolutions"
As a young boy, I used to visit my father at work and, hanging on his office wall, nicely framed, was a scripture titled “Resolutions” by Lloyd Shearer. My father passed away 15 years ago and now “Resolutions” hangs on my office wall at work. Having just celebrated the Easter Holiday, I reflect on how blessed I am and how the following words of wisdom still inspire me:
“No one will ever get out of this world alive. Resolve therefore to maintain a sense of values. Take care of yourself. Good health is everyone’s major source of wealth. Without it, happiness is almost impossible.
Resolve to be cheerful & helpful. People will repay you in kind. Avoid angry, abrasive persons. They are generally vengeful. Avoid zealots. They are generally humorless.
Resolve to listen more & to talk less. No one ever learns anything by talking. Be chary of giving advice. Wise men don’t need it & fools won’t heed it.
Resolve to be tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak & the wrong. Sometime in life you will have been all of these.
Do not equate money with success. There are many successful money-makers who are miserable failures as human beings. What counts most about success is how a man or woman achieves it.”
The Pleasanton Chamber is a community that supports you and your business. As Chamber Chair, I would love to hear from you about your business and what we can do to help you succeed! email shawn.henley@ms.com

The Pleasanton Young Professionals are off to a great start this year.
We have had some exciting events so far which focused on networking, yoga, goal setting, and a very informative workshop for first time (and potential) home buyers. We would like to thank those who have collaborated with us; Joya Yoga, BottleTaps, Porky’s Pizza Palace, Cellar Door, and DB Home Inspection for making our events possible. Your support means a lot to us.
This year, we will be collaborating with the Assistance League of Amador Valley, a non-profit organization who does hands-on volunteerism serving children, teens, and seniors, as well as aiding in education for low-income students through books, clothing, school supplies, and tutoring services all throughout the Tri-Valley area, and much more. We will be accepting donations for books, school supplies, and backpacks throughout our events.
For our upcoming events, we will have two upcoming networking mixers on Wednesday, April 3rd at Cellar Door, from 5-7pm. The following day we will be collaborating with the Lafayette Chamber Young Professionals for a Joint Chamber Young Professionals Networking Mixer on Thursday, April 4th at the Roundup Saloon in Lafayette, from 5:30-7:30pm. Both events are free for chamber members!
