A Message from our VP of Student Life and Mission

To the Carondelet Community -

Although the weather is still chilly, we have enjoyed some longer, sunny days which let us know that spring is on its way. Last Wednesday we observed Ash Wednesday together and were introduced to this year’s Lenten schoolwide service project. This year the Spiritual Life Council is leading us to focus on the needs of refugees. The inspiration for this project came from seeing the needs of the people displaced due to the devastating recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. We are partnering with World Relief Sacramento and collecting household items. On Friday during the Community Block, a guest speaker is coming from World Relief followed by interactive advocacy activities that students can participate in.

This week a group of students is traveling to Arizona for the Ven a Ver Borderlands immersion. This immersion experience in Tucson is done with Borderlinks, focusing on immigration at the US/Mexico border. While students are in Tucson they also meet and spend time with CSJ Sisters who work and minister in Tucson. This is also where the CSJ Sisters who embarked on the Trek of the Seven in the 1870s ended their journey. Our students get a view of this historic part of CSJ history.

This Friday also marks the end of the third quarter. Students can expect a grade report as soon as grades have been stored, on March 7th. This grade report is a significant progress marker and is a time when students and families should discuss potential adjustments to time management, organization, and other supports as we look to finish the year strong.

Last week Carondelet’s soccer and basketball teams competed in NCS play. Basketball placed 4th in the NCS Open Division and soccer defeated San Ramon Valley HS last night with a score of 4-0. Soccer is back to back NCS champions! Both teams had successful seasons and showed a lot of heart and courage on the court and the field. Congratulations to both teams for all of their accomplishments this season.

Blessings,

Jennifer Reinwald

Vice Principal of Student Life and Mission

Students came together for the Ash Wednesday Liturgy to welcome the season of spiritual cleaning and renewal. We look forward to using this time to reflect on our lives and see how we can open our hearts more to God. (Photo of students with Sr. Rosheen Glennon, CSJ)

Reminders + Requests

Junior Prom Tickets and More

Junior Prom: Above the City Lights will take place on March 11 from 7-10 PM. at The Overlook at Port Workspaces in Oakland. Buy tickets, get a guest pass form, and save a spot on the charter bus here. Guest passes and tickets are due March 6.

Closed Campus, No Food Delivery

A reminder that per our student handbook, for the security of our students during the school day, Carondelet High School is a closed campus. This means food delivery services are not allowed on campus and will be confiscated.

Parking Lot Reminders

To help with traffic flow at the exit, we ask that parents and carpools please use the main gate entrance when entering the lot in the mornings and do not park in any numbered parking spaces as these are all accounted for by students, faculty, and staff. Drivers should leave the campus through the back gate.

New Academic Calendar Available

The 2023-24 Academic Calendar is now available on our website.

Uniform Reminders

Uniform Enforcement

Upholding our uniform policy is a top priority this year. Starting the week of February 27, students who are out of uniform, and have already received multiple uniform warnings this year, will be issued a detention to be served that afternoon. The strategies we have implemented this year have not been working for some of our students so we feel the need to increase consequences for repeat offenders. Thank you in advance for your support of our uniform policy.

Junior Prom/Senior Dress Code

Junior Prom and Senior Ball are exciting events for our students this spring. Both events are formal and students are expected to dress up for the occasion. Per our Student Handbook, as with any school event, attire must be appropriate for school. We encourage students to have conversations with their families about what appropriate means to them and to connect with the Deans or Maggie Lettire '13 if they have any questions about a specific dress or item of clothing.

National Drug and Alcohol Abuse Awareness

March Drug and Alcohol Abuse Awareness and Prevention Programming

The month of March ends with National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week. This year throughout the month of March, Carondelet will offer a variety of programming targeted at educating students on drug and alcohol abuse prevention. Lessons in biology, anatomy, and physiology classes will investigate the impact of drugs on the brain. The Cannon Wellness Center will offer substance abuse prevention programming (details and how to attend will be publicized on Schoology). Students will also take a survey on what topics and information they would like to know more about regarding the facts, effects, social impact, and dangers of drug and alcohol use. The results of this survey will inform the Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention programming for next year.

Carondelet and De La Salle are also presenting a Parent Education Night with Debbie Berndt, Director for Parent Movement 2.0 and Substance-Free Athletics.

Keynote: “Marijuana 101, Fentanyl and Parenting Strategies for the 21st Century”

Get up-to-date on the latest in substance science and understanding around adolescent brain development. Substance use disorder is now understood to be a childhood-onset disease. All substance use is related among young users, and mental health is profoundly affected by this use. The overdose crisis in our country is fueled by it, as well as real challenges in the illicit drug trade. It is important for parents to be aware about these issues and to know some strategies for countering the effects in case their child is ever affected. Especially since current research also proves parent influence is one of the most important protective factors when it comes to underage substance use. This will take place on March 14 at 6:30 PM in the Jean Hofmann Center for Innovation. RSVP Here.

Its Almost Carondelet Giving Day

Giving Day is Wednesday, March 8

The heart of Carondelet is many things to many people, but it centers around our students. We invite you to share the heart of Carondelet and participate in our 24-hour campaign to support our students in a special way. This year we have a cohort of generous donors who will match every $1 donated, so all gifts have 2x the impact! Make your early bird gift now and receive TWO heart of Carondelet water bottle stickers.

Phone-a-Thon Volunteers Needed!

Grandparents, alumnae, friends, and everyone is welcome to participate in this exciting event! Parents, you're invited to join us with your daughters! Students may sign up on MobileServe and receive service hours. Shifts are available on March 7 and 8 from 4 - 8 PM. Email Lynne Kenny '86 to schedule.

Sophomore Class Service Work

Birthday Bag Donation Success

The Monument Crisis Center is a nonprofit resource center located in the Monument Corridor that Carondelet has a long history of collaboration with. They do many things that support the CSJ charism, including promoting community awareness of needs and available resources to at-risk and low income residents in Contra Costa County. Monument Crisis Center hosts a variety of drives, including a Birthday Bag Drive that provides families with supplies for their child’s birthday celebration. Through this drive, many families who do not have the opportunity, are able to give their child a special day.

Inspired by their work, our sophomore class wanted to work with the Monument Crisis Center. Our Sophomore Class Council organized a Birthday Bag donation drive earlier this month for their class. In each Christian Living class, a different birthday item was brought in, and we are thrilled to say we exceeded our goal and collected more than 300 items! The Sophomore Class Council assembled 30 birthday bags that we are excited to drop off at the Monument Crisis Center. We look forward to future partnerships with the Monument Crisis Center!

Girls State Conference

Megan K. '24 Named Carondelet's Representative

The Girls State Conference is a renowned summer leadership and citizenship program sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary for high school juniors. In this unique government action learning program participating high schools throughout California get to nominate one student from the junior class to represent their school. It's an honor to be selected as a delegate to this program; candidates demonstrate excellent character and citizenship and are in the top 30% of the class. They should present qualities of courage and honesty and be cooperative with others. Each of the candidates had to submit a preliminary application which included essays, five were chosen to complete the full application and interview with the Girls State committee. We are excited to share that Megan K. '24 has been chosen to represent Carondelet at this year's Girls State Conference. Sarah L. '24 and Rachel K. '24 have been chosen as the first and second alternates. Congratulations Megan! We wish you luck at the conference! Read More Here.
